Gusto is seeking an experienced leader to join our Product Design team in San Francisco. The Design team is responsible for crafting delightful experiences that not only serve small businesses, but have a profound impact on how they build and care for their most valuable asset -- the people on their teams. The ideal candidate will have successfully led a large design team in a previous role, shipped a complex product to hundreds of thousands of users (if not more), and fostered a spirit of learning and teamwork. You’ll be leading and building a team of product designers with a high level of responsibility and room for growth.

Here’s what you’ll do day to day:

  • Be ultimately responsible for all interactions and flows for our customers, including all payroll related interactions
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor a team of product designers who code across multiple projects and disciplines
  • Work closely with Engineering and Product in building the best experiences to keep our customers highly engaged, fully informed, and constantly delighted.
  • Organize and run cross-team collaboration events and workshops
  • Build and implement a consistent design experience against existing and new product lines (including internal tools)
  • Bring empathy, enthusiasm, and motivation to every interaction
  • Appropriately prioritize and guide new projects based on company goals and business objectives

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of experience in software product design for a complex product
  • Prior experience leading and hiring a team of 4+ product designers
  • Owned product design end-to-end for multiple successful products at scale
  • Extremely organized and consistently advocates for design methodologies and processes
  • Care deeply about both technical, scalable, and user-centric models of building things
  • Unafraid of revamping a new flow due to new information or a shift in customer behavior
  • Proactive and proficient at mentoring designers and members from other teams
  • Focused on building a world-class team and processes to showcase not just thorough design thinking, but also beautiful design.
  • A genuine empathy for small business owners and employees and a deep desire to improve their lives

Bonus points:

  • Technical background (CS, EE, ME, etc) and technical expertise is a plus
  • Mobile design experience
  • Financial design experience
