Appointment of Provost, University of Auckland

Te Whare Wānanga o Tāmaki Makaurau University of Auckland has embarked upon a global search to appoint its Provost – a recently established role with significant responsibility for leading the University’s core academic mission and as the senior deputy to the Vice-Chancellor.

The University is Aotearoa New Zealand’s pre-eminent higher education institution and a comprehensive, research-intensive, and international university, as reflected in our global ranking – 81 in the 2021 QS World University Rankings and 1st in the world in the THE University Impact Rankings.

Our mission and values place strong emphasis on both our student body and our scholarly community, and we work with both community and enterprise to advance the well-being of the peoples of Auckland and New Zealand, with a clear commitment to pursuing sustainability. We recognise a special relationship with Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi, are a global leader in teaching and research about the Pacific Islands and Ocean, and are the largest provider of degree-level education to Pacific peoples in New Zealand.

This is an outstanding opportunity to join the University at a time of balanced renewal as it enters a new strategy cycle, re-affirming its commitment to outstanding academic and institutional performance, the centrality of the student experience, and aligning educational offerings with the needs of ever-changing demographics across New Zealand, the Pacific and beyond.

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the incoming Provost will be an exceptional academic leader with demonstrable success in developing and implementing transformative academic strategies. With the Deans of the eight academic faculties among the Provost’s direct reports, the appointee will inspire confidence across the academy and will appreciate the diversity of the communities that make up, and are served by, the University.

The Provost will work collaboratively with other members of the University Executive to implement a bold new strategy, one that further builds on the University of Auckland’s established, international reputation and commitment to preparing students to contribute positively to real world challenges. As senior deputy, the appointee will provide candid advice to the Vice-Chancellor on whole-of-university matters and represent her office with a range of internal and external stakeholders, when required.
