Science is hiring a

Rapid Prototyper

Alameda, United States

Science is developing technologies for a range of serious unmet medical needs. We are unafraid to take difficult technical risks, secure in the knowledge that with a clear understanding of what we are doing and with support from powerful modern tools, more progress is possible than might be immediately obvious. Regardless of role or team, the two most important factors we look for in a candidate are evidence of exceptional ability and the addition of positive energy to the group. As a small, very early stage team in a largely unstructured environment, the ability to independently orient yourself to the problems that need to be solved and then follow through is essential.

We are looking for a handful of talented broadly-skilled builders to help us prototype an exciting new initiative.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Transform mechanical and process engineers' designs into tangible prototypes, overseeing the seamless transition from concept to physical form through precise fabrication and iterative refinement processes.
  • Actively participate in design reviews, offering valuable insights and feedback on manufacturing and assembly processes to optimize efficiency and ensure integration of designs into the prototyping phase.
  • Implement novel manufacturing methodologies to enhance precision and accuracy in part production. Constantly seek cutting-edge techniques to elevate the overall quality of manufactured components.

Key qualifications:

  • Expert in meticulously interpreting and converting detailed engineering drawings into fully functional prototypes through a systematic and precise manufacturing process, ensuring accuracy, quality, and adherence to design specifications.
  • Can generate tests and evaluations on prototypes to assess performance, identify any issues, and gather feedback for design improvement.
  • Experience with a wide range of fabrication techniques such as MIG and TIG welding, CNC milling, lathes, metal stamping, and/or laser cutting. Comfort with construction tools from drills to tablesaws.
  • Experience in estimating costs associated with prototyping projects.
  • Familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in a STEM field.
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion360, and/or Onshape.
  • Previous experience in the design/build of modular systems.
