Research Associate, Fermentation Operations

Zymergen is hiring for the position of Research Associate in our Fermentation Operations team. The Fermentation team at Zymergen is responsible for screening engineered strains and executing fermentation experiments for method development and technical transfer. This Research Associates position will be responsible for executing fermentation experiments using automated fermentation systems (Ambr). We are looking for members of the Fermentation team to be able to handle high complexity in day to day operations, be well-organized, energetic, collaborative, and fully engaged. 

  

Job Description and Specific Responsibilities

Immediate responsibilities include:

    • Weekly setup, running, and tear down of automated Ambr fermentors
    • Prepare equipment and materials 
    • Collaborate with engineering and automation teams to maintain and repair the fermentation systems, including supporting infrastructure (software) as needed
    • Process samples in plate-based and HPLC assays in collaboration with the analytical chemistry team
    • Work with data capture systems to store data 
    • Use data analysis tools to understand process variations and manage process controls
    • Collaborate with outside partners on transfer of technology between facilities
    • Carry out improvement projects and support change department wide

 

Qualifications/Experience

We prefer candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, engineering, or other quantitative disciplines with greater than 4 years of relevant experience working in manufacturing or laboratory environments. We prefer Associates with experience in some or all of the following areas:

    • Experience with microbiology/cell cultivation and aseptic techniques
    • Experience with fermentation processes (aerobic, microaerobic, and anaerobic) is a plus
    • Experience running automated lab equipment (Ambr, automated liquid handlers) not required, but will be given priority
    • Have an understanding of experimental design
    • Ability to work under deadlines, shifting schedules and good time management skills
    • Experience identifying areas of improvement/issue for methods, systems and equipment
    • Experience working in a controlled environment, such as GMP is a plus
    • Familiarity with concepts in statistics, tools to analyze data such as JMP/R and the ability to perform data management functions in Python or SQL not required, but will be given priority.



Additional Details
Shift work and weekend work may be required. The position will require work outside of the normal business hours (M-F 9-6) including weekends and holidays.
