Research Technician - Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences (2 years Fixed Term)

We are seeking an enthusiastic graduate with a masters or honours qualification in biomedical sciences to take up a Research Technician position on an exciting new research collaboration.  The position will be joint between Prof Trevor Sherwin’s group in Ophthalmology and Dr Julie Lim’s group in Physiology. Prof Sherwin’s group have shown that stem cells in the human eye retain their potency in women but not in men as they age. This project will use an animal model of premature aging, established by Dr Lim’s group, to determine the reasons why male stem cells do not age as well as female stem cells and to decipher if this is a major factor in why women live longer than men.

The team have secured a funding grant and now look to offer an exciting opportunity for a 2-year, full time fixed term period, joining a faculty led by world leading researchers and lecturers.  We envision a start date of  1st of October 2020 but could be flexible to work towards a notice period for an ideal candidate.

The role will involve a combination of research, routine lab and equipment maintenance as well as aiding in student instruction.  The work would be varied and interesting with no 2 days looking the same. There would be a variety of techniques that would need to be used (tissue and cell culture work, microscopy, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy as well as confocal microscopy).  The laboratory work will range from Cell Culture to PCR analysis.

The successful applicant will be operating within two highly skilled and functional laboratories and will show the personal and technical qualities necessary to interact with these cross disciplinary teams to ensure a productive project outcome.

Skills and Experience

Our ideal candidate will bring the following:

  • Essential Qualification: PG Masters or Honours research qualification in biological, biomedical or bioengineering sciences.
  • Preferred Qualification: Honours of Masters degree in biomedical science
  • 12 months experience working in a research lab is preferred 
  • Technically precise 
  • Proven competency in Cell culture; and tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, light microscopy, fluorescence & confocal microscopy approaches.
  • Digital PCR analysis
  • Ability to keep to deadlines                      
  • Be a confident computer user in MS office
  • Being able to communicate effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy (Lab notes and reports)
  • Can work independently and with a team and being flexible when required.
  • Partake in discussions around the future of the direction of the research
