Scientific interns, working closely with team scientists and research associates, will have the opportunity to participate in technical activities and advance the development of Zymergen’s first suite of products from high-performing polymers used in next-gen electronics to innovative personal care products. Zymergen is looking for a Chemistry Intern with a computational background to join the Consumer Care Team. The candidate will work on data mining of internal and external databases, ideation of new concepts, working to understand structure-property relations of bioactives and polymer materials. The candidate will work closely with the Chemists and Scientists to participate in technical activities to drive the development of new product development.

Key Focus Areas of the role may include:

  • Carry out data mining of internal and external databases to generate a library of molecule of interest with applications in consumer care products
  • Use computational models to understand molecule structure-property relationships and materials properties
  • Document and format data for materials characterization and formula compositions
  • Conduct Literature search and market research to aid in the ideation of new project concepts
  • Work closely with Scientists to understand data analysis, experimental/search results, draw conclusions, and identify next steps

For our internship roles, you will need: 

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (Bachelor’s or Master’s) with at least one semester or quarter remaining post-internship​
  • Available to work 40 hours per week during the summer​
  • Major, experience, or demonstrable interest in the position you apply for
  • Authorization to work in the US

 We are looking for qualifications and experience that includes:

  • Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Polymer Science, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Data Science, or similar quantitative discipline
  • At least 2 yrs of academic experience with a background in computational chemistry and/or photochemistry
  • Excellent communication as well as intercultural skills
  • Open-minded and motivated to work on a multi-cultural team
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong customer service orientation

Additional skills that are preferred but not required:

  • Experience with polymer materials and/or photochemistry
  • Experience using computational chemistry models and tools
  • Highly motivated in a collaborative team environment
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite and ability to utilize new software/automation tools for scientific and business activities
  • Capability to manage multiple ongoing multi-day workflows
