Senior Analyst - Community Finance

Join Wikimedia in our ambitious project to empower people to create and share the sum of all human knowledge. We are looking for an experienced Senior Analyst to work within our Finance and Community Engagement departments:  to support the Foundation’s goal of becoming a model for financial planning, analysis and reporting across the Wikimedia movement; to standardize, improve and maintain WMF’s financial review process; to train staff and community organizations on good financial practices; and to partner with others to create effective financial reporting protocols.

We’d like you to do this:

This position will provide support in these key areas:

  • Formulate financial model(s), which reflect the insights and requirements of the WMF, its Board (a subcommittee of the Board named the Funds Dissemination Committee) and key community stakeholders
    • Applying well developed skills in Finance - financial planning, analysis and financial statement and internal control reviews
    • Analyze current and past financial data and performance for grant proposals for the Funds Dissemination Committee
    • Prepare a summary analysis of the information for management - Take an abundance of financial data being generated by WMF and formulating guidelines around the most important metrics
    • Work with the CFO to improve the systems used to gather and distribute the financial analysis and reporting.
  • Partner with Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Engagement teams with their grant making and community support activities - Overseeing the distribution and development of resources to support community leaders, organizations, contributors and projects
    • Analyze and proactively support the grants team with issues on international accounting, statutory tax and other financial type compliance requirements-Compliance structure to address the fiduciary requirements of Wikimedia as well as compliance issues (e.g., conflicts of interest, U.S. travel/activities for non-U.S. grantees, limitations on grant funds for legislative or political activities, review of grantee against the master list of specially designated nationals)
    • Partner with CFO, Controller and external experts to recommend and implement best practice in financial planning, budgeting and reporting standards
    • Partner with Community Resources team by reviewing and analyzing audited financial statements, reviewing financial reports, and providing input and support on grant applications.
    • Establish financial operations solutions for Wikimedia movement organizations, which enable movement organizations worldwide to efficiently and effectively form, sustain and succeed
    • Develop budget guidelines and templates for movement organizations.

We’d like you to have these skills and attributes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in finance or accounting
  • 5+ years experience in finance
  • Experience with financial aspects of international organizations
  • Experience with financial planning, analysis and reporting
  • Experience with assurance and internal controls
  • Service-oriented approach: able to anticipate, understand and meet the needs of professionals
  • Strong spreadsheet skills
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate complex financial concepts with a variety of people
  • Experience training or building capacity on financial issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to communicate with non-technical users
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities including urgent tasks.
  • Function in  in a highly collaborative, consensus-oriented environment
  • Proven ability to work well on a team
  • Be excited about supporting community organizations and teams worldwide

And it would be even more awesome if you have this:

  • Experience living and/or working outside the US and working with non-English speakers
  • Experience in non-profits, particularly international non-profits
  • Experience in training and capacity building
  • Experience with Adaptive Insights required and Adaptive Discovery
  • Experience with Intacct, accounting software,
  • Familiarity with Wikitext (wiki markup) language
  • Understanding of the free culture, free software, or online rights movements
  • MBA, CPA or other certification
  • Experience with International Finance
