A summary of the role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior BI Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role will be pivotal in maintaining and enhancing our existing B2C and B2B data cubes, ensuring they continue to provide valuable insights for our finance and marketing departments. You'll have the opportunity to bring to bear your deep expertise in BI while exploring and contributing to our ongoing cube migration and modernization efforts towards our cloud-based solutions.

 

This role will be right for you if you are happy to:

  • Work directly with the head of data engineering  and multiple collaborators across finance, B2B and B2C (primarily but there will be plenty of others) to fully shape data solutions, influencing design, engineering data for deployment and beyond

  • Prioritise the project workload to ensure maximum impact

  • Be the BI cube domain expert for technical solutions 

  • Design the development of high-quality data solutions within Financial Times’ BI cube and cloud solutions.

  • Create a framework to solve issues and analyze them to find the cause and best solution to be applied

  • Understand the High-Level Enterprise Data Model Design and translate/refine it into detailed logical/ETL designs, to satisfy a broad range of business data requirements

  • Lead the design and implementation of low maintenance, high quality, well monitored, secure and scalable solutions to customer problems

  • Lead the design, build and operate solutions, throughout their lifecycle, which meet both functional and non-functional KPIs

  • Understand and play an active part in designing the architecture, tooling and release cycle processes used by the BI team

  • Be a leader in company-wide processes, frameworks and guidelines

  • Deliver documentation & resources to ensure BI cube can be used by all interested parties

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of FT’s underlying data and data pipelines and data structures.

  • Develop a close relationship with our collaborators and provide operational and strategic support

 

Requirements for the role:

  • 5+ years in Data Engineer/Data Warehouse Development with hands-on experience in data warehousing, data technologies, and business intelligence in large-scale DW/BI projects.

  • Very strong ability and demonstrable experience in writing sophisticated SQL queries and stored procedures.

  • 5+ years of experience in ETL processes with MS SQL, DAX, SSIS, and Airflow.

  • Experience in data migration projects, particularly migrating legacy BI systems to modern data platforms (e.g., cloud environments like AWS, or GCP). Familiarity with migration standard methodologies and potential challenges.

  • Demonstrated ability in translating business requirements into technical specifications and capable of explaining the data to non-technical users.

  • Solid understanding of business intelligence and data warehousing concepts including but not limited to DW design and modelling techniques, ETL processes, data marts, reporting, master data management, data quality, data lineage

  • Strong database design and development skills in any relational database technology (SQL Server, Redshift)

  • Experience working with data sources of varying volumes, variety and velocity

  • Good knowledge of optimization techniques like partitioning indexing/performance tuning on both relational and columnar databases

  • Experience with version control systems like GitHub

 

Desirable

  • BI experience with delivering/maintaining semantic/abstraction layer

  • Broad understanding of AWS / GCP and their underlying principles

  • Experience with modern reporting, data visualisation/analytics tools like Looker, Tableau, Qlikview, Power BI

  • Experience in technical project management

  • Working knowledge of any non-traditional databases (such as AWS Redshift, MongoDB, neo4j etc.)

  • Knowledge of Python.

  • Experience working within an environment where operational support and monitoring of code and systems is part of the culture (DevOps)

  • Experience on a major DW/BI project in a medium/large organisation

  • Knowledge of any data analytics/statistical tools like R, SAS etc.

  • An understanding of Data Mining and machine learning techniques
