Genius is searching for a Senior Community Manager to lead our community strategy and engagement.  The Senior Community Manager develops and fosters positive relationships within and among community members, especially our editor community. Our ideal candidate is one who is passionate about collaboration, online social engagement, shared passions, music, and the Genius knowledge project. You empathize with community members, work hard to understand their experience, and advocate for their voice. You work collaboratively with everyone at Genius to improve the user experience, allowing our contributors to create high-quality collaborative content and have fun doing it. You’re constantly thinking about the game that lives at the intersection of community and product and your goal is to help the Genius community grow exponentially. A fluency in music culture—particularly pop music and hip-hop—is essential.

Genius began as a website for decoding rap lyrics and has since evolved into the Internet's most comprehensive database of musical knowledge, with more than 50 million monthly unique visitors and tens of thousands of contributing users. Check out our recent article in The Wall Street Journal.

This is a full-time role in our Brooklyn, NY office.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute on the overall strategy for community growth and development at Genius to build a crowd-sourced editorial content engine
  • Design and manage staffing of Community team
  • Advocate for product priorities to improve and grow a crowd-sourced engine of quality content
  • Coordinate with other stakeholders at Genius to optimize community messaging
  • Daily active participation in the knowledge project and within the community

Key qualifications:

  • 4+ years strategic, creative and hands-on experience building and scaling online communities
  • 2+ years management experience
  • Experience with and knowledge of gamification strategies
  • Deep knowledge in a wide variety of music genres, particularly pop music and hip-hop
  • Outstanding online and offline communication skills, including writing and public speaking
  • A Genius account and active participation in the knowledge project
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced startup environment
