Senior Manager Program Communications

Code for America is hiring a Senior Manager Program Communications, who will be responsible for helping to scale our programs and our impact through exceptional communications strategy, writing, editing, and project management skills.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who can build awareness for and crisply articulate the societal impact of our programs and elevate the stories of our users, volunteers and government partners who strive to make government better every day. This position will work across the organization to creatively and measurably broaden awareness of our programs, drive attendance at the annual Code for America Summit and advance our systems change priorities. You’ll thrive in this role if you’re a communications pro with a  track record of developing omnichannel campaigns that deliver. Bonus points if you have a background in the nonprofit sector, B2B SaaS, political campaigns, or the social good space.

The role reports directly to the Director of Program Marketing and is based in San Francisco, CA. 


In this position you will:

  • Develop and execute strategic communications plans that advance the programmatic goals and mission of Code for America.
  • Create original content for internal and external communications, including but not limited to digital and print collateral materials, blog posts, white papers, web content, event communications, and others as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Media, and Communications to develop proactive media relations campaigns to support program goals, including drafting op-eds, pitching stories, developing briefs, and staffing interviews.
  • Manage all program website and blog content, including content updates and requests.
  • Research and analysis of existing and emerging program opportunities to be supported by communications strategies.
  • Ensure brand messaging alignment and integration across all of Code for America’s communications and media relations activities.
  • Drive engagement in programs, tools, and resources across stakeholder groups.
  • Collaborate with marketing team members to create content for various platforms, events, initiatives, social media.



  • At least 5-7 years of communications experience, preferably in a non-profit.
  • Experience creating, implementing and measuring communications outreach including media relations, social media, web, email, and print.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized, deadline driven, and able to manage multiple projects and engagement simultaneously. 
  • Experience with audience segmentation and tailoring communications accordingly.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization and can anticipate issues proactively.  
  • Proven ability to partner with cross-functional teams like engineering, design,  and data science.
  • Able to advocate for one’s ideas; and equally able to take constructive feedback.
  • Proven track record of delivering results using through a user-centered, iterative, and data-driven approach.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple competing priorities.
  • Has experience using a marketing automation platform (e.g Hubspot, Mailchimp, or Marketo).
  • Proficient in Salesforce
  • Ability to manage a diversity of stakeholders, including government partners.
