Manager/Senior Manager Software Reliability Engineering

The Zymergen Software department develops a sophisticated software platform that empowers our scientists to combine cutting edge chemistry and bioengineering to create new materials for the 21st century. The Zymergen SRE team (aka the ZRE team) focuses on enabling our Software and Data Science teams to create, test, deploy and operate reliable applications within that platform. We architect and implement our Kubernetes strategy, establish CI/CD practices, and provide a number of foundational services such as log aggregation and browsing via the ELK stack, an observability platform built on Grafana and Prometheus, and service discovery and routing. We help other teams experiment with and adopt new AWS and K8S services, and help solve cross-cutting architectural problems. We are looking for an engineering manager to lead the team.

Job Description and Specific Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the work: prioritize work streams, plan roadmaps, ensure input from other software teams, management, and the ICs is taken into account; identify opportunities for creating leverage through engineering; balance build/buy considerations.
  • Manage the process: a good manager will be able to create a repeatable, reliable delivery cadence; establish and evolve processes for on-call responsibilities, service readiness evaluations, vendor management, planning processes and cycles, regular retrospectives, etc.
  • Manage the culture: maintain and grow a culture focused on solid engineering, continuous learning and improvement, customer service, open and honest feedback, appreciation of a diversity of opinions and backgrounds, and clear written communication and documentation.
  • Manage the people: support individuals on the team by providing clear and actionable feedback, aligning their work with their interests and personal growth goals, providing training and education opportunities & stretch projects, and communicating important context that connects their work to the company objectives. Make decisions necessary to build a high-performing, high-trust, high-skill team.

Qualifications/Experience

We value empathetic leaders who see their teams as collections of people, and are able to address the needs of an organization by finding best alignments of needs and interests, motivation, and challenge.

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience managing SRE teams: establishing ways to address ad-hoc workloads while making progress on planned work, supporting team members, creating necessary processes for prioritization, planning, execution, etc.
  • Unafraid to hold people accountable for delivering on their commitments, capable of working with people to help them reach their potential
  • Good communication, both written and oral; ability to structure and deliver a message at a level appropriate to a variety of audiences, from individual contributors to upper management to non-technical, but deeply analytical, customers.
  • An understanding of Kubernetes and AWS ecosystems, including the benefits & challenges
  • Experience establishing, and evolving CI/CD practices in a larger technical organization
  • Interest and curiosity in materials science, chemistry, and biology a strong plus, but not required!
  • Experience with the following technologies is a bonus, but not required: Terraform, Kafka, ELK stack, Jenkins, Grafana, Prometheus, Python packaging & deployment.
