The Role
RedU is hiring our first Senior Product Engineer for a 12-month contract starting at $150k to supercharge our Product Team. We’re a bootstrapped education platform, funded by our users, and focused on delivering top-tier professional development for nurses and teachers. As our first in-house developer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our platform, with dozens of updates shipped daily. You will sit next to our product manager and have complete independence on the project.
We’re seeking candidates based in Brisbane, QLD (or willing to relocate) who are keen to work in our office. At RedU, we move fast and collaborate closely, our hiring process reflects that: a 30-minute phone call with the hiring manager, followed by an in office chat with the hiring manager and another member of the team.
The Work
Our platform is a learning management system (LMS) currently built with Ruby on the back end, driving a smooth and dynamic front end developed using JavaScript, Node.js, and Next.js. While we recommend leveraging these technologies to align with our existing stack, we’re open to exploring other tools and approaches that you believe could effectively support our goals. In 2025, we’re gearing up to launch new features, enhance performance, and scale to meet the needs of an expanding community of professionals who depend on our tools for their growth.
As our first engineer, you’ll work hand-in-hand with our Technical Lead and founders for the first few months. They’ll bring you up to speed on our codebase, vision, and pace. After that, you’ll take the reins, driving product advancements and setting the stage for future hires.
What Success Looks Like
- Own our codebase and deeply understand the needs of our professional development users
- Spearhead the rollout of major features that redefine how people learn and grow
- Establish rock-solid development practices through code quality and documentation
- Build patterns that make our platform scalable and a joy to work on
- Be the go-to voice in shaping our technical direction
About You
Degrees are optional as we’re after real-world impact, not framed certificates.
You’re a seasoned developer with deep expertise in Ruby (back end) and JavaScript (especially Node.js and Next.js for front end), plus experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms. You’re fired up about building an LMS that transforms professional growth. You thrive on cracking tough challenges, whether it’s optimizing a Ruby API or streamlining a Next.js UI and love seeing your solutions light up users’ lives. Your code is clean but pragmatic; you know when to ship fast and when to refine.
This is a high-ownership role. We want someone curious, self-driven, and ready to set a high bar for what’s possible as we grow our team.
Why Apply?
