Position Description

Color Of Change seeks a Senior Project Manager on the HR & Compliance (HRC) team to (i) manage and support day-to-day operations and initiatives of the Senior Director of HR & Compliance office, (ii) manage relationships and represent the HRC team for various org-wide working groups, and (iii) drive special HRC-specific projects and events, including independent travel or travel with the Senior Director of HRC.

The ideal candidate combines exceptional relationship management skills and knowledge of Human Resources functions with stellar project management and problem-solving skills and will be able to handle competing and shifting priorities. The Senior Project Manager must regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance. This position is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in racial and social justice issues who is excited to bring their talents and insight to bear in a fast-paced, collaborative, and strategic growth-focused environment.

The Senior Project Manager on the HR & Compliance team is a hybrid role (approximately 1-2 days in office per month) that can be based out of our Washington, DC, Oakland, CA, or New York City office, and reports directly to the Senior Director of HR & Compliance.


  • Support Operations for the Senior Director of HR & Compliance office:
  • Manage and support complex projects involving the HR operations portfolio which includes employee relations, payroll, benefits, audits, reporting, policy, onboarding, employee engagement, and compliance
  • Serve as the internal hub for the Senior Director of HRC’s workflow by developing and implementing processes, systems, and norms to ensure effective workflow management
  • Own daily, weekly, and quarterly workflow digests ensuring all requests for the Senior Director of HRC’s review, feedback, and input are triaged, tracked, and communicated accordingly 
  • Collaborate and work closely with the Executive Assistant to the Senior Director of HRC to ensure that tasks are managed to completion and workflow management corresponds with both scheduling needs and long-term strategic priorities
  • Work with others on the HRC team to draft org-wide communications (ie. memos, reports, decks, etc.) for HRC
  • Partner with the Executive Assistant to the Senior Director of HRC to support the Senior Director’s portfolio of activities and travel
  • Travel independently and/or with the Senior Director of HRC (up to 20%)
  • Relationship Management & Organizational and Team Impact
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships as a key liaison with select internal and external staff, and partners
  • Serve as the primary participant in various cross-team groups on behalf of the HRC team
  • Work with other leaders on the HRC team to ensure that all projects and major bodies of work are aligned
  • Serve as the HRC team’s internal Project Manager working to make sure all projects have project plans with date-driven milestones for all deliverables and project timelines from conception to completion and implementation, including workflows, approvals, debriefs with lessons learned
  • Understand basic HR & Compliance practices and ensures that all HRC team projects are aligned with the team’s mission, vision, and goals
  • Event Management & Special Projects
  • Work with the Senior Director of HRC to develop and manage the team’s goals-tracking system
  • Work with the Senior Director of HRC to ensure successful cross-team collaboration and communication within the HRC team
  • Collect, disseminate, and memorialize lessons learned, project stories, and success across the HRC team and workstreams
  • Provide regular updates and communications to the team about the state of the project and how the project aligns with HRC’s mission, vision, and goals
  • Identify and resolve issues as they arise with projects (e.g., timeline changes, shifts in project teams and capacities)
  • Document and communicate progress toward project goals over the course of the project term
  • Defining and refining key metrics to track and manage projects involving
  • Ensuring continuous process improvement based on feedback and lessons learned
  • Work with the Senior Director of HRC and Executive Assistant to plan and produce all team meetings, retreats, and other work-related gatherings
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by management

  • To excel in this role, you likely bring the following experience(s) to the table:
  • A minimum of 4 - 6 years of relevant experience with exceptional problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of human resources functions and ability to apply project management practices through an HR lens
  • Demonstrated alignment with Color Of Change's mission and campaigns, and an interest in deepening your commitment to racial justice and building a career in impact
  • Commitment to confidentiality and the ability to exercise absolute discretion and independent judgment
  • Excellent relationship-building skills, with demonstrated experience managing up and across an organization
  • Experience developing and implementing new tools and systems in partnership with internal and external stakeholders
  • The ability to prioritize among competing priorities and multi-task across a broad spectrum of collaborators
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and written – with demonstrated ability to write persuasive memos, concept papers, and PowerPoint presentations
  • Previous experience directly managing and/or coaching a team is not required but valued
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, adaptability, and a positive attitude

The salary for the Senior Project Manager (HR & Compliance) position is $85,000 - $89,250. This is a full-time, exempt position. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package.
