What does the 10x team do?

The 10x Technology Team in the Office of the CTO creates value for Ocado in the near-term as well as the long-term by working on speculative projects that push the boundaries of what can be achieved with technology. The team provides an environment in which innovation can thrive and there is plenty of opportunity to collaborate with Ocado's specialist software and engineering teams in the UK and Ocado's development offices in Europe.

What will I be doing?

As a Senior Software Engineer in the 10x Technology Team, you are responsible for working on speculative projects that involve fast prototyping and experimentation. You will be required to obtain and interpret data from various sources, and create products for internal and external consumption. You will design and execute experiments with the collaboration of your peers. You will be required to share your knowledge and expertise with the rest of the company, as well as disseminate complicated information and techniques to senior members of the business. You will be required to contribute to technical blog posts, papers, patent applications and open sourcing.

You are a collaborative, entrepreneurial T-shaped person who enjoys the challenge of continuous self-improvement.

 What we are looking for?

You have demonstrable skills in the following:Rapid prototyping - applications and interfaces,

  • The ability to pick up multiple programming languages; with experience in some of: Python, Javascript / Typescript (NodeJS), C/C++, Mathematica, Matlab, or others
  • Functional, Logic and OO paradigms
  • Pair programming, software peer review, experience and enjoyment of coaching less experienced software engineers to nurture their journey towards software-writing excellence
  • A strong academic background for example which may include the following:

(a) strong public examination grades in maths/science/engineering subjects in the final year of secondary school 

(b) A 2-1 or higher grade in a degree in maths, science, computing, engineering or other similarly relevant subject

(c) a Masters-level or PhD-level qualification in maths, science, computing, engineering or other similarly relevant subject 

(d) experience of studying academic papers from the leading international research conferences (on computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, control engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer science or engineering) and using the theory, practice and any related open source software associated with the academic papers in your developments of innovative systems. (Please provide a list of relevant experience).

(e) experience of developing innovative systems based on a sound understanding of theoretical underlying principles, techniques or methods. (Please provide a list of relevant experience and highlight any theoretical underlying principles or techniques used)

Bonus points for experience in:

  • Machine learning
  • 3D printing / embedded software / hobby electronics / hobby mechanics / DIY
  • Simulation
  • Another dimension - e.g. art/graphics design, user interface design, sketching, presenting, leading, organising, technical writing, creativity e.g. music composition or performance  / painting / authoring
