Relativity is hiring a

Senior Trajectory and Flight Safety Engineer

Seattle, United States

Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

We are seeking a highly talented Trajectory and Flight Safety Engineer to join our rapidly growing vehicle simulation group. This position will provide outstanding technical contribution to the simulations required to predict and model how off-nominal trajectories may influence mission risk. A high degree of autonomy and leadership is required.

What you’ll do:

To support our mission of changing the way rockets are built and flown, you will develop in-house tools including but not limited to trajectory simulations with failure-mode injection, debris modelling, entry analysis, blast overpressure, and public safety risk. This role will interface with regulatory agencies such as Space Launch Delta 45 and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Office Commercial of Space Transportation (AST) and their analysts to ensure mission-specific risk is reduced and accepted.

What you need to know:

In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and is able to lead their own projects into completion. Ideally, you are someone who has come from a fast paced, aerospace environment, having completed difficult projects while collaborating effectively with other key groups.

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree (BS/MS/PhD) in engineering
  • 5+ years of experience working in areas such as GNC, system simulation, physics, or other flight sciences areas
  • Strong technical skills in areas such as programming (Python, MATLAB, C++) and Excel
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and intense startup environment
  • Ability to complete projects with ownership of end-to-end solutions with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to solicit agreement from stakeholders that regulatory requirements are met by the work products you deliver

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Prior work in a technical leadership role for a launch vehicle or satellite development effort
  • Experience producing documentation and certification packages for regulatory review
  • Experience with interpreting regulations and requirements, and developing strategies for how to satisfy them in a dynamic company
  • Experience modeling dynamics of launch vehicle failures with 6DoF tools
  • Experience calculating expected casualty and probability of individual casualty metrics for public safety analysis
  • Experience modeling explosive blast overpressure events
  • Experience assessing potential for conjunction events between orbital vehicles, and/or conjunction on launch assessments (COLA)
  • Experience with integrated software and hardware testing (hardware-in-the-loop, HITL)
  • Experience using applied statistics (such as Bayesian statistics) to model failure probabilities for integrated systems
