Focus on the research, development, and testing of software components that support a sustainability-across-the-stack approach. Work within an open-source environment to create innovative orchestration solutions that enhance energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of distributed computing systems.
This role involves implementing sustainable practices throughout the entire technology stack—from virtualization and infrastructure to application development and Edge IoT setups, including sensors and other IoT devices.

Key Tasks:

  • Research and Development of Sustainable Software Components: Develop software components that contribute to energy-efficient orchestration within the Edge-Cloud ecosystem. Implement and test new features that prioritize sustainability, ensuring they meet performance and efficiency goals.
  • Open-Source Programming: Engage with the open-source community to share findings, collaborate on new ideas, and integrate community feedback. Document and share code, tools, and best practices to foster a collaborative environment for sustainability-focused development.
  • Testing and Validation: Use benchmarking tools and metrics to measure the energy consumption and environmental impact of software across the stack. Continuously optimize software based on testing results, aiming for highest levels of sustainability and performance.
  • Sustainability-Across-the-Stack Implementation: Work with cross-functional teams to ensure sustainability is integrated across all layers of the software stack, from application code to infrastructure management. Develop and implement orchestration strategies that optimize resource allocation, workload distribution, and energy consumption. Identify and address sustainability challenges at each level of the stack, including virtualization, infrastructure, application development and Edge IoT setups.


 

  • Experience in software development, with focus on sustainable computing or energy-efficient systems. Experience working in open-source environments and contributing to open-source projects. Strong understanding of distributed systems, cloud computing, and energy-efficient algorithms.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, or Java, with a focus on energy-efficient coding practices.
  • Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices architecture. Knowledge of sustainability metrics, benchmarking tools, and performance optimization techniques. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience with AI/ML techniques for optimizing energy efficiency.
  • Passion for sustainability and a desire to apply knowledge to reduce environmental impact of cloud computing.
  • Speak English at least on B2 level and/or German language on B2+ level
