Sr. Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

23andMe is looking for a Sr. Cloud Infrastructure Engineer with extensive expertise in building and maintaining cloud compute environments. You will be joining the Cloud Infrastructure team that manages all aspects of 23andMe's cloud infrastructure, from access controls to data protection to establishing, promoting and enforcing standards and security practices for all internal teams across the company. You will focus on maintaining the existing cloud infrastructure, provisioning and operating infrastructure management solutions, automating resource management and governance. You’ll have an opportunity to help millions of people gain insight into their history and health, and help 23andMe power the future of new therapeutics discoveries.

What You'll Do

  • Assume ongoing ownership of the existing multi-account environments in AWS. Maintain and improve our scalable and reproducible cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code.
  • Use your problem solving skills and technological expertise to identify areas for improvement, design and implement solutions to the challenging problems.
  • Define, document, and champion the adoption of standards and best practices for operating secure cloud environments. Consult with and train other internal teams on best practices for operating in the cloud.
  • Perform code reviews to ensure the consistent quality of code and adherence to the security best practices — your sharp eye will raise everyone’s game. Use code reviews as an opportunity to elevate the team’s overall expertise.

 

What You'll Bring

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Cloud Infrastructure, DevOps, or IT Operations roles.
  • Solid understanding of cloud platform architecture and the key concepts of cloud computing: shared responsibility model, identity and access management, and cloud networking architecture.
  • Strong familiarity with a range of AWS services for compute, storage and monitoring. Experience managing and protecting large datasets in AWS is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of and experience with the modern best practices: zero-trust networking, SSO authentication mechanisms, access controls and secrets management, etc.
  • Strong familiarity with the principles of DevOps, proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools and methodology. Experience using Terraform with a range of providers is a plus.
  • A passion for leveraging automation and CI/CD tooling, plus for container based CI/CD systems.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and a desire to grow and expand as container orchestration guru.
  • Understanding of how to operate pipelines at scale while maintaining the security and integrity of sensitive data. Background or experience with high performance computing is a plus.
  • Handy with git (or other VCS), Python, UNIX shell, Makefiles, building CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Can-do attitude, motivation and ability to prioritize and share tasks with other members of the team.
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid work environment.
  • Cloud provider certifications are a plus, but not required.
  • B.S./M.S. in computer science, engineering or matching technical training obtained on the job.

Pay Transparency
23andMe takes a market-based approach to pay, and amounts will vary depending on your geographic location. The salary range reflected here is for a candidate based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
