About the role

We’re looking for a stellar Senior Copywriter to join our award-winning in-house Creative Team. As the lead copywriter for our retail investing business, you’ll concept and craft copy across our advertising and customer marketing channels.

You’ll collaborate with designers and social strategists, marketing managers and consumer insights leads to develop breakthrough creative that reaches prospective audiences and engages current customers. You’ll simplify complicated concepts, inject personality into a historically dry industry, and bring your own style of creative thinking to breathe life into ideas big and small.

You’re the sort of writer who balances strategic thought with precise execution. You have feelings on the Oxford comma (whether you love it or hate it), and you’re ready to state your case. You’ll fight for the word of your choice, yet know when good is good enough. Most of all, you're excited to work on a product that tangibly impacts people's lives.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

 

  • New York City: $110,000 - $120,000

A day in the life

  • Concept and write for a wide range of advertising and customer marketing channels—primarily paid social and display advertising, video, audio scripts, and email
  • Collaborate with a diverse array of partners across the company—fellow creatives, financial advisors, engineers, project managers—to develop work that helps us achieve our business goals
  • Partner with our Compliance Team to produce highly creative work in a highly regulated industry
  • Proofread other writers’ and team members’ work to maintain brand voice and style
  • Share your unique perspective, questions, and feedback on projects produced by Team Creative
  • Build upon and add to our culture of innovation, iteration, and excellence in execution

What we’re looking for

  • Substantial copywriting experience across integrated marketing channels (as mentioned above, think display, paid social, podcast, commercials, and email—less so longform writing or content)
  • An innate curiosity for how people think and how best to engage and drive them to action
  • A copyeditor’s eye for detail and the ability to become an expert on our in-house style
  • Comfort using data to inform copy and develop a case for the best idea
  • A stellar portfolio of work representing your voice, your ideas, and your abilities—even if it's not what your manager/client signed off on
  • Note: Prior financial experience is not required

What happens next

We’ll take a few weeks to review all applications. If we’d like to spend more time with you, we’ll reach out to arrange next steps, which will include 3-4 sets of meetings with your future colleagues.

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of  applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
