The vision of the WPP Open Platform is to create a common development and architecture framework, with supporting infrastructure, for the development of digital products across WPP. The platform will provide the single point for access to world class technology and data for our agencies; allowing them to build and scale products and applications, then share them across the business, improving visibility and collaboration. As a Site Reliability Engineer Lead (SRE Lead), you will be responsible to manage a team of SRE’s to proactively, ensure the stability, resilience, and scale of our services by automation, testing and engineering. To build on expertise from product teams’ systems/operations, cloud infrastructure, build and release engineering, software development to make sure services are available, cost optimized and fit for purpose early in the development lifecycle. 

 

What you'll be doing:

  • You will regularly provide technical leadership to make sure that the designs are implemented using appropriate tools and techniques
  • You will influence the management of technical debt across projects; making the right calls between balancing pragmatic delivery and compromising implementation patterns
  • You will work very closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure our systems are fit for purpose by understanding of the business context and the factors that drive the product life cycle
  • You will stay on top of GCP costs accrued in our projects and prioritise optimisations when costs exceed expectations.
  • You will be the senior contact/escalation point for SRE people issues, including defining roles, hiring and working with operational leads to effectively onboard new team members.
  • You will maintain infrastructure to comply with security asks e.g. upgrading modules and components
  • You will Identify performance bottlenecks and propose solutions for its mitigation
  • You will regularly interact with engineers and teammates to optimize software and platform configurations
  • You will provide leadership and guidance across the SRE team, acting as a subject matter expert and leading best practice techniques.
  • You will contribute to the documentation of strategic DevOps operating model changes and to the definition of future/new 3rd party technical partnerships and subsequent onboarding/integration into the platform.
  • You will regularly conduct knowledge sharing session with team members to enable them to contribute to backlog items related to infrastructure provisioning, monitoring and best practice
  • You will evaluate risks and defects, analysing specifications, and customizing applications for specific customer needs.
  • You will promote a culture of service support, identifying new ways of working e.g. out of hours/critical event support and any potential impact this may have on the workforce.
  • You will be responsible for producing and maintaining documentation relating operational run and playbooks.

 

What you'll need:

  • Significant experience of working with senior stakeholders to manage expectations and provide technical insight
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring and hiring
  • Significant and demonstrable Cloud Computing experience with knowledge of Cloud Native products
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of using Unix / Linux based Operating Systems
  • An ability to understand and translate product and business requirements into technical solutions rapidly and effectively
  • Proven experience of project working and commercial development processes - particularly Agile methodologies
  • Networking fundamentals (switching, routing, load balancing) with focus on GCP
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of using Scripting/programming (Bash, Python, etc.)
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of maintaining and deploying changes to relational DBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • A strong communicator, able to lead and facilitate discussions across many tiers, including functions like architecture, technical specialists, business analysis, team leaders and senior management
  • Significant experience in DevOps implementation and in evolving practices and ways of working through multi-disciplinary teams, business frameworks and culture. An individual who can perform highly in a multi-faceted role – facets that include a very strong technical knowledge, and awareness of emergent trends
  • Has deep understanding of Kubernetes, its system components and autoscaling (GKE)
  • Has robust Helm experience
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of CI/CD (GitLab, Github Actions etc.)
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of monitoring tools (DataDog, Grafana stack, Prometheus, Splunk etc.)

Nice to have:

  • Understanding of Distributed Systems concepts, High Availability, vertical and horizontal scalability
