Cruise is looking for a Staff External HMI (Human Machine Interface) Technical Lead to identify, evaluate, integrate, and lead the sourcing of display and lighting technologies for the exterior of our autonomous vehicles. In this role you will be responsible for a full external display and/or lighting solution that addresses the needs of a variety of customers, other road users, and operations staff. You will need to manage and decompose requirements from various stakeholder teams such as product, brand, industrial design, mechanical integration, electrical integration, software, and operations. You will model display and lighting performance to refine requirements and component architectures. You will build relationships with Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to evaluate various technologies and propose customizations or even fully custom solutions. You will consult technical subject matter experts on mechanical, electrical, and optical design and integration elements, though you will be expected to contribute with a significant amount of expertise in display and lighting hardware. You will collaborate with our automotive partners to complete sourcing agreements with suppliers.

Leading the development of display and lighting technologies in partnership with Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers
Decomposing requirements from various stakeholders to hardware requirements
Modeling display and lighting parameters to balance performance, cost, vehicle styling, and other requirements
Collaborating with test engineers to establish methods for verifying models and/or characterizing display and lighting components and subsystems
Evaluating supplier technology offerings for display and lighting core technology and complete solutions
Leading the development of an overall subsystem design that harmonizes the product experience, cost, mass, power consumption, vehicle styling, and vehicle performance such as aerodynamics
Collaborating with supply partners to develop, integrate, manufacture, and scale the subsystem design
You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:
BS or MS in optics, optomechanics, electrical engineering or a related field
10+ years of industry experience
Proficiency with optical systems, specifically displays
Proficiency with key performance indicators for lighting systems
Experience with optics, illumination fundamentals, display fundamentals, and/or optical coatings
Experience working with LED displays, LCDs, OLED displays, or vehicle lighting solutions
Experience with electromechanical systems design
Experience working through an automotive sourcing process at a major automotive OEM
Experience working with automotive Tier 1 and 2 suppliers
Strong communication skills
Ability to adapt and operate under ambiguity, setting requirements if they are not available
Ability to identify and act on opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency
Bonus Points!
Familiarity with regulations for vehicle lighting
Proficiency with CAD tools such as NX, Solidworks, CATIA, etc.
Proficiency with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, etc.
Experience with key integration concepts such as tolerance, vibration, thermal, power, etc.
Experience developing high-reliability hardware
Experience with FMEA and Functional Safety concepts
Familiarity with working in a mass production environment
The salary range for this position is $156,400 - 230,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
