Vox Media is hiring a

Staff writer - Foreign - Borders and International Identity

Washington, United States

Vox.com is a user’s guide to the news produced by the beat reporters and subject-issue experts who know it best. And we’re looking for a staff writer for our foreign section, who can help us expand our coverage of foreign affairs and the big ideas and global trends driving them.

The ideal candidate would be able to explain how questions about the future of national borders and the ways individual groups identify themselves -- or are seen by others --  are shaping both events on the ground in individual countries and the broader relationships between nations. The beat would look at how borders are reappearing in parts of Europe just as their possible disappearance is triggering violence throughout the Middle East. Language skills or time spent living or working overseas would be a plus.

This is a high level writing job in the Vox.com newsroom and will involve a wide variety of short and long posts. It is a new beat, so the reporter will have the ability to help shape what stories to cover, and how.

If you have…

  • A strong desire to report on and write about the future of national borders and questions about religious and ethnic identity inside individual countries.
  • An analytical approach to major stories and a passion for digging into everything from interesting shifts inside individual countries like how the treatment of the little known Rohingya ethnic minority threatens to return Burma to the status of an international pariah. It would also require bigger-picture pieces on the way the Syrian refugee crisis is leading European countries to re-establish the borders erased by the creation of the EU.
  • At least three years of foreign affairs experience
  • The ability to explain complex ideas and intricate political dynamics in clear, straightforward language
  • Ideas for new and creative ways to approach the conventional modes of foreign-affairs writing and an interest in experimenting with new story formats, from videos to interactive graphics
  • Strong reporting skills, including knowledge of which sources to turn to when working on a story — any story

… you may be the writer we’re looking for!

Please submit a resume, a cover letter, and three clips (links in your cover letter, or in the same document as your cover letter).

In your cover letter, include three ideas for foreign stories that you think deserved coverage but didn’t get much attention in American media, and explain how you would have covered them at Vox.

This position is preferably based in DC, but we're open to NYC for the right candidate.
