Refinery29 is hiring a

Staff Writer, Health & Sex

New York, United States

Refinery29’s Health & Wellness team is in search of a talented Staff Writer with 3-5 years of experience working on service-driven content in a digital editorial space.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about women’s health and sexuality and is eager to help our team create the most interesting, surprising, highest-quality sex and health service stories out there. Our wellness content is fresh, engaging, and — most importantly — focused on providing women with envelope-pushing, next-generation information. The ideal candidate will be equally at ease covering offbeat trends in wellness, relationship questions that aren't the usual women's magazine fodder, or an exciting new study on women's sexual habits. We don't do diets. We are inclusive, sex-positive, and science-driven.

This position will primarily involve writing service-oriented sex and health stories, as well as second-day takes on newsy topics and, ideally, some first-person stories as well.

Also, yes, Refinery29 covers fashion, but this is not a fashion job. Please take your passion for fashion to a different opportunity, fam.

You will be:

  • Reporting and writing service-driven sex and relationship stories

  • Reporting and writing service-driven stories about health, fitness, and nutrition

  • Attending and participating in brainstorming meetings

  • Building and producing stories in the CMS

  • Brainstorming SEO and social media packaging for stories

You Will Have:

  • 3-5 years of experience at a digital editorial publication

  • Degree in journalism or related major

  • Familiarity and significant experience with science-based health and psych reporting, including reading and interpreting studies, interviewing qualified medical experts, etc.

  • Familiarity with proper pronouns for gender identities, sensitivity around topics like sexual assault, knowledge of kink, etc. — in other words, general awareness of contemporary/progressive sex positivity.

  • Experience writing innovative, surprising service-driven stories

  • Team-oriented, responsive, and comfortable collaborating, but also able to work independently

  • Experience working with social media and SEO strategies
