Background & context

STEMHaus is an immersive and intensive online summer school programme being developed by Equal Education Partners to be continued for a second year during the summer of 2023, building on the successes of summer school programmes and STEM teaching initiatives developed by Equal Education Partners in recent years. Examples of these include the MIT Global Teaching Labs project and Seren International Online Summer School.

In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Welsh Government’s Seren Academy, the University of Oxford and Equal Education Partners collaborated to create an online summer school programme for over 100 Year 12 Seren students across Wales. The Seren International Online summer school then continued in 2021 and 2022, serving growing numbers of learners each year. Following the success of the these programmes and of the first year of STEMHaus in 2022, the Welsh Government is supporting the continuation of the programme for Seren Foundation learners, to work with up to 250 of Wales’ brightest students in August 2023. 2022 was the first year that summer schools were held for learners in Years 9-11.

The Seren Foundation is the Welsh Government’s flagship initiative to support Wales’ brightest school pupils to access competitive higher education opportunities in Wales, across the UK and around the world. In recent years, Seren’s international initiatives, including its summer school programming, have had a significant impact in widening access to higher education and supporting hundreds of pupils to reach their potential.
