The Transportation Planner is a key transportation role with the movement of materials to and from the Kingsport Packaging Mill.  The preferred candidate will have a background in the manufacturing and distribution environment with heavy truck transportation and strong customer service experience. This position will be involved with the day-to-day coordination of all logistical activities required to ensure we provide the on-time delivery service our customers deserve. The individual will be required to provide clear communication to sales service, planning and our many supply chain partners to ensure a detailed and accurate exchange of information. This position will participate in carrier onboarding, rate negotiations, safety initiatives, as well as managing and solving critical transportation problems while working to reduce overall transportation costs to Domtar.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide effective communication and interaction with internal and external business partners, including fiber procurement, dedicated and contracted truck carriers, rail carriers, 3PL’s, sales, customer service, manufacturing facility personnel daily to assure Kingsport’s supply chain operates successfully.
  • Load Planning – creation of load plans, tendering to carriers, monitor rail quantities, and order transfers between internal warehouses.
  • Work with machine planner in case any issues are found with the production schedule.
  • Monitor machine schedule, adjust load plan dates as needed.
  • Work with sales team to address concerns, issues, and questions related to customer orders.
  • Rail – rail switch, billing of rail cars, car order, and problem resolution.
  • Truck carrier management – accessorial approvals, loading issues, and in-transit issues.
  • Late order notification – this report should be generated daily by someone on site and that person can contact carriers asking for updates on late shipments. Currently, this is conducted by a 3 party we have contracted to help fill out the report.
  • SAP problem resolution – SAP team will email myself or Barry to resolve exceptions in SAP.
  • Participation in weekly mill calls.
  • Trial order tracking.
  • Send shipment reports on specific customers to sales team as needed
  • Maintain all operational aspects of the Transportation Management System (TMS) on-site to efficiently tender loads to our carrier base while utilizing the tool to stay head of potential problems with real-time visibility, streamlined communication, and exception management. This includes a periodic transportation cost review to ensure the best mode and routing options are being utilized and optimized.
  • Work with all parties to efficiently set up new destinations, rates, carriers, and other required information in the appropriate systems to ensure high service levels are provided inclusive of freight tendering, accrual, freight approval, reconciliation, and payment.
  • Support yard and trailer pool management requirements to assure fluid and efficient truck, trailer, and product movement at the mill site.
  • Maintain company inventories located at warehouses and in transit on railroads, trucks, and multiple logistics providers (3PL).
  • Perform routine analysis on performance trends.
  • Investigate and resolve operational transportation issues and make process improvements to prevent reoccurrence and improve our supply chain.
  • Assist with transportation budget development and variance reporting in support of financial analysis. Review current reporting systems capabilities and enhance and/or recommend more effective methods/systems which will better support supply chain initiatives. Serve as mill point of contact for all Transportation related claims and coordinate with different teams to ensure timely settlement of claims.
Required Qualifications
  • BA or BS in Operations Management/Transportation & Logistics is preferred.
  • Previous transportation or logistics experience with a proven record of success.
  • Thorough knowledge of DOT regulations and TL sector industry knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing ERP, transportation management (TMS), warehouse management (WMS) and product tracking systems (PTS), as well as Microsoft Office applications.
  • Preferred experience in a Flow to Work, High Performance Work System
