The Role:

The Vivarium Supervisor carries a high level of responsibility in a significant supervisory, administrative, and human resource management role. This individual will report to the Manager of Vivarium Operations (MVO) and will directly supervise the operations staff which may include all or a portion of the following direct reports - Animal Care Technicians, Research Associates. Serve as the Training Coordinator and will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the Training Program standards. This entails the full scope of onboarding new hires with laboratory safety training to hands-on technical procedures proficiency testing and maintaining accurate, detailed documentation for each employee. Serve as the Safety Officer for the Vivarium Operations and is responsible for coordinating and communicating status with EHS, IACUC, internal staff, and management. Support the conduct of research studies by providing technical support during the execution of procedures, and by providing oversight and direction to research associates during the execution of procedures.  He/she will be responsible for any scheduling needs for approved studies and ensuring personnel coverage to fulfill study requirements. Provide support for the MVO with updates on vivarium capacity, inventory management, developing and implementing departmental policies related to animal facility operation and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory guidelines. Serve as an IACUC administrator to our internal IACUC committee.

Meaningful Things You’ll Do:

  • Coordinates daily operations and personnel management. 
  • Composes daily/ weekly work schedules and assigns duties to the staff.
  • Oversees and maintains comprehensive shared study schedule for Science and Operations.
  • Training Coordinator and Safety Officer activities. 
  • Maintain standards of the Training Program.
  • Establish training schedule for employees.
  • Maintain documentation/records for each employee.
  • Technical support in the execution of study procedures. 
  • Serve as Lead RA for studies.
  • IACUC Administrator. 
  • Maintain status of IACUC protocol pipeline, Animal Use Census, meeting notes, etc.
  • Provides support to the Manager of Vivarium Operations in supervising and training the operations staff.  Incumbent’s direct attention and focus towards our Training Program decreases deviations and increases efficiency and clarity to their roles and impact to the organization.
  • Provides support to the Manager of Vivarium Operation in creating and maintaining daily/weekly schedules providing clear direction to execute assigned tasks.
  • Supports operations in all aspects of study execution.

Education and Experience: 

  • BS degree in a related field or certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as a Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) preferred
  • Five or more years of experience  in a preclinical laboratory environment
  • Experience supervising and coordinating work of others
  • Experience with database management programs; proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Docs
