First Look Media is a new-model media company devoted to supporting independent voices, from fearless investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking to smart, provocative entertainment. Launched in 2013 by eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar, First Look Media was created with the belief that independent perspectives are vital to both a vibrant culture and a thriving democracy.

First Look operates as both a studio and digital media company.  As a studio, we develop, produce and finance content for all screens and platforms including feature films, television, digital series and podcasts. As a media company, we are finding new ways to connect compelling independent creators with passionate audiences through our own properties and on media platforms of our partners.  

Along with First Look Media's studio business, we are currently home to three digital properties: The Intercept, launched in 2014 by Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Jeremy Scahill, which is dedicated outspoken defense of the First Amendment and investigative reporting on abuses of power in government and beyond; Field of Vision, a visual journalism unit headed by Laura Poitras together with filmmaker AJ Schnack and curator Charlotte Cook, that presents short-form documentaries on stories around the globe through the lens of top filmmakers; and, an award-winning social news service that works with online communities around the world to tell stories about global conflict, free expression, and civil rights.

In addition, First Look Media will be launching other media properties devoted to scripted and non-fiction programming and content from independent creators.

The Position:

First Look Media is seeking a highly motivated, strategic thinker with excellent business development skills, specifically focusing on non-profit development. This role will report to FLM’s Chief Business Officer and will focus on creating revenue opportunities for FLM’s 501c(3) non-profit division and businesses. These lines of business include the investigative journalism publication, The Intercept, the short documentary series Field of Vision, and the social news platform The role will plan for and manage the development and solicitation of public support including corporate and individual donations. Ideal candidate will have expertise in a range of development strategies and tactics including corporate donations, consumer fundraising & donations, and foundation grants. 


  • Build and develop revenue opportunities for our non-profit brands and properties
  • Identify optimal fit and balance between monetization potential and privacy-oriented social mission
  • Create positioning for corporate donations and manage all aspects of outreach
  • Develop and oversee solicitation of grants, and other types of public support
  • Develop the business cases and structure recommendations for new ventures and partnerships
  • Work with legal on term sheets and economics: Evaluate deal economics and draft contracts and term sheets with help of Legal
  • Prioritize the team’s pipeline and workflow

Background & Qualifications:

  • 7-10 years of business development experience at a major media company or non-profit and focused on digital media / ecommerce
  • Experience with non-profit fundraising and development strategies and tactics
  • Deep knowledge of technology, digital media, advertising, non-profit and ecommerce landscape
  • Creative out-of-the-box thinker who loves big idea generation
  • Ability to prioritize high value opportunities
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with strong attention to detail required
  • Go-getter who can build contacts anywhere and can close big deals.
  • Proficient in excel and business analysis
  • BA/BS with strong academic track record; MBA a plus
  • Outstanding references furnished upon request
  • Strong interpersonal capabilities, project management skills and ability to work collaboratively with a cross-functional team
