What You Will Do 

The Operations Lead will be responsible for the completion of all Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) Material Handling Equipment (MHE) commissioning activities post-installation on our new-build Fulfillment Center sites. They will create and manage the commissioning schedule and lead the testing teams to complete all commissioning activities on-time against the overall project schedule.

Examples of components which are commissioned:

  • Master bot control software
  • Grid
  • Bots
  • Material handling equipment such as  pick stations, decant stations and chargers

The role requires leadership of commissioning, technology and engineering teams to complete the complex, interlaced commissioning activities required to integrate all components into one functioning system that is ready to be handed over to the business testing teams.

As well as line managing the Testing team & Engineering Operations teams on site, you will also project lead varying resources from across the business, both on-site teams and remote support functions, to complete the commissioning schedule. Teams could include:

  • Ocado Technology teams
  • Rainbow R&D
  • Product Continuous Improvement
  • Central Engineering
  • Engineering Operations

As part of the role, you will be required to report on progress to Project leads, including:

  • Weekly presentations and update sessions
  • Weekly written reports published across the business
  • Conference calls / Video conferencing

 Who You Are

 To qualify for this position, you should meet the following requirements:


  • At least 3 years of experience leading teams of people from varying backgrounds and knowledge bases, preferably as a warehouse operations shift lead or team lead 
  • Experience working with a project environment 
  • Ability to lead remote teams and ensure effective communication and collaboration
  • Ability to understand system complexities to ensure the correct resource and development areas are allocated accordingly
  • Ability to manage progress and delivery of fixes against timelines and overall cost benefits (time/performance/money)
  • Ability to clearly present findings and progress in a concise yet detailed manner
  • Ability to apply the right mix of urgency with good process and understanding of business impact
  • Role is site based during project delivery


This position will require 80% travel to our sites across Canada and eventually the United States, with the first assignment at our Fulfillment Center in Toronto, ON.
