Position Summary:

The Freakonomics Radio Network is looking for a full time Audio Engineer.  The Audio Engineer will contribute to the engineering, mixing, sound design, and sonic identity of the Freakonomics Radio Network family of podcasts and radio shows.

In addition to helping to ensure that the highest quality audio is captured and delivered, the Audio Engineer contributes in the creation and execution of industry-leading sound designs, collaborates with hosts and producers on the editing process, and works to ensure that our listeners always enjoy audio of the highest quality.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the technical process of recording, editing, and mixing episodes, including sweetening/repairing audio
  • Contribute to the creative aspects of the shows, including sound design, scoring, and the development of new ideas for creative sound-scaping.
  • Record and mix advertisements with wide-ranging sponsor expectations
  • Record and mix promotional material
  • Assist with the ongoing improvement of production and operational workflow
  • Assist with updating and maintaining archival file systems and data workflows
  • Help to train staff in technical-skill development, and offer support to the content team in Pro Tools editing and audio recording best practices
  • Meet deadlines consistently and output flawless final products
  • Work with other Stitcher audio engineers to manage and operate production facilities for all podcast activities including pre- and post-production engineering, voice-over and mixing
  • Professionally represent Freakonomics Radio, Stitcher, and the engineering department to hosts and guests

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 2–3 years experience working with podcasts, broadcasts and/or other audio and multimedia content
  • High level of Pro Tools experience required, as well as familiarity with Waves, iZotope, Fab Filter, and other industry-standard 3rd party plugins

Requirements and General Skills:

  • Significant creative experience designing stereo soundscapes, ambiences, vocal and musical effects, and mixing to artistic effect
  • Extensive experience with audio hardware, including industry standard microphones, mixers, cabling, etc.
  • Familiarity with generally-accepted podcast loudness standards, and ability to deliver episodes at consistent loudness levels according to in-house specifications.
  • Knowledge of and experience with current IP-based audio transmission platforms, including Source Connect, Squadcast, Riverside, and Zoom.
  • Passion for recording, editing and scoring audio storytelling
  • Past success in a fast, efficient, highly organized and disciplined group, with proven ability to consistently perform in a high volume, fast turnaround environment
  • Collegiality, a quick wit, and enthusiasm for Freakonomics Radio required
  • Experience with capturing near-studio quality audio in home environments is preferred
  • Experience in field recording is preferred

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with Mac computers and the Mac OS X operating system, and with cloud-based storage and productivity platforms

Work Environment

  • Regularly required to work weekend and/or non-standard hours (with commensurate time off provided)
  • Minimal travel
