BioInformatics Product Manager

You + Helix

Helix is a place where innovators and doers gather in order to drive significant progress in population genomics. We have come together to work at the intersection of clinical care, research, and genomics.

If you’re excited by the idea of making a meaningful impact and joining a team where we pride ourselves on driving innovation through fostering an environment with an emphasis on empowering one another to grow, Helix might be the place for you!

Helix + The World

Our end-to-end population genomics platform enables health systems, life sciences companies, and payers to advance genomic research and accelerate the integration of genomic data into routine clinical care. We support all aspects of population genomics from recruitment to translational research and help our partners use genomics to improve health outcomes, increase patient engagement, and lower costs.   Leading health systems, including Renown Health, AdventHealth, and Mayo Clinic, use our population genomics platform to power some of the world’s largest and fastest-growing population genomics initiatives.

For the COVID-19 public health crisis, Helix has built one of the nation’s largest COVID diagnostic labs and has been on the leading edge of national viral surveillance efforts tracking B.1.1.7 and other viral strains.

What is special about this role:

This product manager will work closely with the Bioinformatics team across both our population genomics and viral parts of the business. A major focus will be ensuring that we can expand our analytical capabilities to include more difficult regions of the genome and introducing new analytical tools as we broaden our technology capabilities.

As a Product Manager, you will:

  • Capture and communicate requirements with clear prioritization; track and drive development using Jira and serve as scrum master for the team
  • Maximize cross-functional efficiencies and effectiveness during development and implementation; coordinate dependencies with engineering, train and gather feedback from stakeholders
  • Ensure quality of analytical tools and results, smoothness of releases, and compliance with all regulatory and clinical requirements
  • Contribute to proper documentation; manage change controls and deviations.
  • Be a source of clarity and communication, and the subject matter expert for all things bioinformatics. Set proper expectations on project status, timelines, dependencies, risks, and create mitigation plans
  • Assist with new partner onboarding, coordinate special data deliveries, run analytics to track and communicate on performance metrics
  • Be an advocate and educator

About you:

  • PhD or MS in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related field
  • Some familiarity with Python and Bash, some simple programming abilities with any language
  • 2+ years relevant experience in a biotech laboratory, preferably in a clinical setting
  • Experience as a product owner, working at the interface of science and software
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Organized, reliable, team player, able to weigh trade-offs and make decisions in an ever-changing environment

Pluses:

  • CLIA/CAP and/or medical device experience
  • A solid grasp of the various file formats and tools in bioinformatics (FASTQ, BAM, and VCF)
  • Familiarity with R and SQL

What’s important to us:

  • Curiosity — we are all passionate about the possibilities enabled by having access to your own genome
  • Responsibility — we have an obligation to people and our partners to operate with highly credible research guided by well respected advisors, with clear and effective communication about our products
  • Agility — flexibility and a desire to be nimble, smart, and effective are important to the Helix culture
  • Follow-through — we’re building a diverse team with amazing track records of achievement in multidisciplinary environments
