About On Deck

On Deck is building a modern education institution: a platform serving the many strands of identity of ambitious people who want to change the world.

We started with the On Deck Founder Fellowship (ODF), an intensive 10-week program that helps talented, ambitious people gain the network and skills needed to build the next generation of great technology companies.

Then we launched the On Deck Angel Fellowship (ODA) to turn world-class operators into the next great angel investors, investing and supporting this next wave of founders. Recently, we launched the On Deck Writer Fellowship (ODW) to help groups of enterprising writers grow their audience and hone their craft, while connecting them with a lifelong community of creative, collaborative peers.

And we’re not stopping there - check out the fellowships we're planning for here as part of On Deck Labs, a series of experiments in the future of education.

To be "on deck" is to aspire to starting something new.

Role Overview

In this role, you’ll partner with the CEO to on day-to-day prioritization, management of strategic projects, investor & customer-facing presentations, as well as on your own special projects. In any given week you might strategize and execute with the founders on PR and marketing opportunities, partner across the org as a consultant, assist in the fundraising process, join meetings with existing or potential investors, work on the design for marketing activities, and help run & organize executive leadership meetings.

Requirements

  • Be a trusted thought-partner and a liaison to the team and external contacts, including customers, partners, and investors
  • Synthesize large amounts of information from many different fields and have the ability to prioritize, organize and create action items with this information
  • Help prioritize and execute mission-critical projects and initiatives
  • Amplify the partners’ decisions and time by giving strategic advice and leading the execution of key initiatives such as partnerships, events, investor relations, and more
  • Have excellent verbal communication and writing skills, both for internal notes and external communication

Who you are

  • Highly organized, process-driven, and detail-oriented -- a strong ability to synthesize and prioritize
  • Fantastic communicator with high emotional intelligence. Supportive to the core.
  • Hungry to learn and willing to make mistakes
  • Impeccable written English skills
  • Smart generalist able to understand science-heavy, technical writing, and abstract concepts
  • Experience in a startup environment preferred -- founder, operations, or business development at a high growth startup, or experience working in VC
  • Alignment in mission is a huge plus
  • Entrepreneurial, action-oriented, and independent
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment without losing focus on the big picture

Why You Might Be Excited About Us

  • We’re tackling a big problem with even bigger potential. Participants in our existing Fellowships say great things about us.
  • You’ll be able to work remotely and (mostly) set your own schedule. On Deck was a remote-first team even before COVID, so we know what makes for a great remote environment.
  • You'll have a lot of flexibility in your role, and will be able to help define what our education org and content base looks like going forward.
  • We're backed by a who’s who of the biggest names in the venture investing world, including Village Global, Marc Andreessen, Keith Rabois, Chris Dixon, Balaji Srinivasan, Bloomberg Beta, and so many more. (Read more about our fundraise and 50-year vision here.)

Why You Might *Not* Be Excited About Us

  • We're small (~30 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, this role isn’t for you. You'll help create our company's culture.
  • We're an early stage startup. Projects and priorities are likely to shift.
  • Everyone on the team is extremely mission-driven, and works incredibly hard to push towards our lofty ambitions.
  • You should be comfortable with just a dash of chaos. This is not the kind of job where you show up and we tell you exactly what to do every day.
  • We’re unapologetically supportive of the role technology can play in shaping a better future, and we believe people are the most powerful part of the equation

Location
Our team works remotely, but you will have to be available to work on U.S. PST-friendly hours, which may be difficult from Europe or Asia.

Compensation
This is a paid, full-time internship, and you would start as soon as possible.

There is the potential for the term of the internship to be extended into the spring or transition into a full-time role based on performance.

On Deck is the first place the best talent looks when thinking about starting or joining a startup.
