Commodity Owner- Freight

Sparta Commodities currently has a fantastic opportunity for a driven and entrepreneurial Freight Commodity Owner to join our growing Commodities team, based remotely in the UK or Europe. This is a great career opportunity for an experienced wet freight specialist, with a deep knowledge and understanding of the global shipping markets and their relation to the oil commodities markets, to play a key role in the development of a suite of shipping products for an early stage but highly regarded premium business.

As a Commodity Owner for Freight at Sparta, you will be the architect of new product development for our suite of shipping products, which are both stand alone and a key part of Sparta’s Global Arbitrage product. You will be the industry expert that provides the guidelines to our Product Owners and technology team to develop the features and tools that our users need to make faster and better decisions. You will be assisted by consultants (former ship charterers/owners/brokers) that will provide the pain points and needs that our end users have and, in collaboration with the Product Owners, you will create the features and tools that solve them.

Duties

• Design, create and implement the architecture for a suite of clean products freight trading tools.
• Work closely with the commercial, product and leadership teams to formulate a go-to-market strategy and build a lucrative user base with significant growth potential.
• Plan and implement a product strategy that facilitates user growth over the next 3-5 years.
• Represent the business in client engagements and events as the freight markets expert.
• As required to accommodate growth, build a high performing freight team of “A” players.

Requirements

• Strong Excel and numeracy skills, including the ability to understand the basic principles of statistics and to apply maths functions.
• Significant experience trading or analysing the global wet freight markets.
• Deep understanding of the global freight markets and the potential data and analytics needs of our targeted user base.
• General knowledge of the energy markets, with an understanding of back/middle/front office operations and in particular arbitrage.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of role types and personalities, internally and externally.

• Established trading contacts in the industry and a naturally relentless approach to leveraging contacts for data and information.

• High intellectual curiosity with a self-starter mindset and effective problem-solving skills.
• Ability to perform well to tight deadlines.
• Excellent English writing skills.
• Cultural and social sensitivity.
