CQ Roll Call Video Intern

About the Role
CQ Roll Call seeks a video reporting intern for a paid 10-12 week internship during the summer. We tell video stories about the policies, events and people on Capitol Hill; from rushing to a breaking news scene, to carefully researched and produced motion graphics explainers, to long-form pieces on the policy impacting people in districts across the country. This internship will give a promising student the opportunity to build a video journalism portfolio in Washington alongside our award-winning journalists who keep readers informed with nonpartisan news and analysis.

You Will:
- Monitor the House and Senate floors for breaking video news, clip newsworthy soundbites from leadership press conferences and events, gather news clips from key committee hearings
- Pitch short- and long-form enterprise and feature video stories on Capitol Hill that give viewers access to the halls where lawmakers, lobbyists, staffers, and press do business
- Write scripts, shoot b-roll and primary footage for enterprise pieces
- Understand production needs prior to, during and after a shoot (testing batteries, soundchecks, etc.)
- Work different shifts as needed. Some late nights or weekends are possible
- Learn the post-production needs of our publications including captioning and recutting video for various social mediums
- Keep up-to-date on developments in Congress, the administration and federal agencies
- Get training on shooting and reporting on multiple platforms, with opportunities to write and contribute to podcasts
- Be coached by editors and reporters on how to visually cover government, politics, and policy

You Have:
- A bachelor’s degree or at least three years of work toward one, with significant coursework in journalism, broadcast or photojournalism, video production or a related field
- Considerable experience with Adobe Premiere required; familiarity or experience with After Effects a plus
- A sense of urgency for getting breaking news out accurately and quickly
- Regularly produced visual content for a campus publication during at least one school year, or equivalent work experience. Three self-shot video clips and 10 photo samples are required with your application. Two writing samples a plus.
- A strong interest in government or politics
- A commitment to journalism ethics and attention to detail
- An ability to write and cover D.C. in neutral, nonpartisan language that eschews political spin
- Strong verbal communication abilities

About You
You want to tell compelling stories through the powerful medium of video. You have a strong interest in media, government, and politics and want to explore a potential career in the Washington area. You want to learn more about the political and legislative process and want to hold the powerful accountable. You're an enthusiastic team player who can work collaboratively in a fast-paced, competitive environment.
