The Mission:

At C the Signs we are re-imaging a future where every patient survives cancer.


Our purpose:

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide -with 1 in 2 people being diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life. Currently, half of all patients are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease, because of this less than 35% of patients will survive cancer. Yet if diagnosed early, over 80% of patients would survive 10 years or more.

At C the Signs we are building the world’s largest prediction model for cancer. With the ability to predict who will get cancer, what type and when - prior to developing any symptoms.


The Company:

C the Signs is a multi-platform system that uses artificial intelligence mapped with the latest evidence, to identify patients at risk of cancer. Covering the entire spectrum of cancer C the Signs can identify which cancer(s) a patient is at risk of and the most appropriate next step – all in less than 30 seconds.

C the Signs was founded in 2017 by two doctors working in the UK National Health Service (NHS) after losing a patient to a late diagnosis of cancer.

C the Signs is now being used in over 1000 primary care providers across the UK NHS with almost 10,000 healthcare professionals using the System. In 2021 alone, C the Signs has assessed over 50,000 patients and diagnosed over 2000 people with cancer.

We have just closed a £5m Series A round and are now launching the system into the US, scaling the technology and the Model, and launching a patient facing application C my Signs - tackling genetics, cancer screening, awareness and prevention.

The role:

We are looking for you to take the reigns as Chief Technology Officer and join us at a very exciting time in C the Signs’ history. You will lead on the expansion of the technology team, doubling its size in the next six months. You will also lead on the transition from a research driven algorithm approach to a ML data driven model. You will work closely with the other C-suite team and have significant influence over the strategic direction of the company. The role will require you to:

  • Work closely with stakeholders across the business, including C-suite and within the technology team
  • Form strategies that meet the short, medium and long term goals of the company
  • Monitor technical debt and supervise system infrastructure to ensure functionality and efficiency
  • Research and keep up to date with new technologies that may offer the company competitive advantage
  • Oversee and support the Scrum process
  • Work closely with the Chief Product Officer and Product Team to help support the architecture design and implementation of new features or products
  • Spearheading the framework to transition from an algorithm-based system to a ML data driven model
  • Monitor and develop KPIs and budgets for the technical team
  • Mentor, train and support all levels of the technical team
  • Liaising with suppliers to enhance and improve the product functionality and future range
  • Identify team needs/gaps, assist in the recruitment process and grow the technical team
  • Undertake measures to improve quality, resilience and integrity of the C the Signs platform
  • Work closely with the Tech Lead and Head of QA to foster a strong technology culture
  • Work with an internationally located development team (most of our development team is based in Europe)

Requirements

  • Worked as a CTO or in a senior technical leadership position in a previous software company
  • Wide ranging knowledge of modern technology stacks (we currently use Java on BE, React on FE, and AWS as the cloud microservice architecture)
  • Experience managing large data sets for performance and security
  • Utilised machine learning techniques for prediction modelling (e.g. Bayesian modelling) based on large data sets
  • Keeps up to date with trends in technology stack development, tools, libraries and softwares to yield a competitive edge
  • Has a good understanding of data protection and cyber security
  • A detailed comprehension of Scrum with experience managing multiple Scrum teams from a senior leadership position
  • Understanding or experience in the balance/conflict between modern technology stacks and the hardware the software is installed on
  • A good understanding of the best quality assurance techniques
  • A BSc/BA in computer science/engineering or equivalent
