Job Overview:
Coupang’s Technology & IP Legal team consists of over 20 lawyers and legal specialists, and is responsible for: 1/ leading on country-specific, regional and global technology and commercial transactions (excluding M&A); 2/ leading, managing and implementing the Company’s global intellectual property strategy; 3/ supporting the Company’s Chief Security Officer; 4/ providing legal support to the Chief of Staff – Administration; and 5/ developing and implementing legal risk management frameworks for third party vendors with the support of Procurement and Compliance.
Key Responsibilities:

Technology & Commercial:
- Transactional: Lead, supervise and execute on a variety of country-specific, regional, and global technology and commercial transactions (excluding M&A). This will include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex technology and commercial contracts. You will be hands on with end-to-end responsibility for legal support and will be required to work in partnership with Procurement and Technology teams.
- Advisory: Provide legal advice to business partners on all technology legal matters including open source software, information security, App development, and contractual and related matters.
- Team management: Manage, supervise and develop a team of dedicated technology and commercial lawyers.

Intellectual Property: Lead and oversee the Company’s global intellectual property (IP) team. You will be responsible for:
- Setting and implementing the Company’s global IP strategy and enabling that strategy throughout the Company.
- Managing a global IP portfolio (including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets) in alignment with the Company’s business goals.
- Effectively engaging and communicating with Business and R&D leadership on IP-related goals and objectives, including key initiatives and risk management.
- Providing counsel on IP-related matters including disputes, transactions, and enforcement.
- Overseeing the Company-wide anti-counterfeiting strategy, including government and external stakeholder management.
- Setting and managing the Company’s IP budget and liaising with the CFO on IP budget matters.
- Third party legal risk management: Lead the development and implementation of a company-wide third-party legal risk management framework to set the standards for third party contracting with vendors across the Company. This will include: Developing policies and procedures for minimum vendor contract standards and requirements; Setting legal risk assessment, review, and approval requirements for vendor contracts; Being a central point of contact to oversee and monitor compliance with the third-party legal risk management framework. Building awareness across legal, corporate support, and business teams to improve contract standards and risk assessment of vendor relationships across Coupang.
Qualifications:
- A technology, commercial and IP lawyer with at least 15+ years’ experience across in-house and private practice.
- Qualified lawyer in the U.S., Korea or a common law jurisdiction (e.g. England, Australia, Singapore).
- Demonstrable experience in managing a team of leading technology, commercial and IP lawyers.
- Fluency in English.
- Exceptional ability to consistently deliver creative, thoughtful and business-oriented results that appropriately balance growth and risk in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
- A willingness to learn voraciously and take on new scope and challenges.
- Ability to adapt easily to rapid and diverse business changes.
- Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Sound judgment in developing and implementing legal solutions.
