Job Summary
For Our Future and For Our Future Action Fund seeks an ambitious and independent self-starter to serve as our Deputy General Counsel. This position is appropriate for a new attorney with an interest in and passion for political campaigns. Successful candidates will be fast learners and methodical in their approach. The ideal candidate would have some experience in political law, campaign finance compliance, or issue advocacy campaigns. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience working with political or not-for-profit organizations as in-house counsel, outside counsel, or in another capacity.
This is a full-time position through at least November 11, 2022.
Essential Functions
- Research and advise on organizational needs including compliance with non-profit tax law, campaign finance regulations, federal and state lobbying rules, employment laws, contracts, and internal corporate governance.
- Review voter contact materials such as canvassing scripts, literature, phone scripts, mail, digital advertising, etc. to ensure compliance with rules promulgated by the Federal Election Commission and appropriate state agencies.
- Review, edit, or draft contracts, grants, and other agreements between For Our Future Action Fund and our consultants and partners.
- Advise program teams and compliance department on appropriate classification and allocation of various activities relevant to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 organizations (grassroots and direct lobbying, public education, political spending, etc.) and assist accountants and outside counsel in filing Form 990 and other tax documents as well as on FEC and state campaign finance reports.
- Prepare, edit, and review guidance, memoranda, and policies on PAC registration, campaign finance reporting, disclaimer requirements, fundraising policies, document retention, and other internal operations.
- Design, prepare, and conduct training for staff on federal and state campaign finance issues.
- Work with our Employment Law Counsel on employment and human relations issues, composing or editing position statements, helping conduct investigations, editing employee handbook, and developing employee relations policies as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. law school, and a license to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
- Familiarity with campaign finance issues and/or legal issues involving tax exempt organizations preferred.
- Effective communicator who has excelled in building successful relationships and a commitment to collaboration. Has an established record of fostering teamwork and consensus, effectively managing conflict, and provoking creative problem-solving and risk taking, and is inclusive of diverse individual and cultural perspectives.
- Has strong written and verbal communication skills and is a persuasive communicator with strong multidisciplinary project skills.
- Maintain enthusiasm and calm demeanor in stressful situations.
The salary for this position is based on experience and comes with a comprehensive benefits package.

Expected Hours of Work
- Normal hours of business are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time Monday thru Friday, however employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours including weekends and nights.
- Employees are required to abide by certain blackout dates during a campaign cycle or other key deadlines, and generally not allowed to take off during blackout periods. Emergencies are not affected by this policy.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Employees will be required to work and interact, in an office environment or otherwise, with coworkers, volunteers, voters, or community partners on a regular basis. If state and government stay-at-home orders, phased reopening orders, or other factors related to the COVID-19 virus (or any other reason) limit For Our Future’s ability to engage safely in in-person work, employees may be assigned other duties to be conducted from their homes.

The COVID-19 vaccination requirement does not apply to roles with a work location in Montana or Tennessee. All qualified applicants for roles with a work location in Montana or Tennessee will be considered regardless of vaccination status as required by applicable state or local law.
