Director, Technical Communications

Fivetran’s documentation receives rave reviews from our customers – it is a core part of our product. The Technical Communications Team owns technical documentation and in-product text. Our globally-distributed team of technical writers collaborates with product managers, engineers, designers, and support to produce world-class documentation and UI copy that helps our customers succeed. As the Technical Communications Director, you will manage and empower a team of amazing dedicated documentation experts and technical writers who are matrixed within other organizations.  You will hone the documentation strategy & vision. You will partner with leaders across the company to champion excellent documentation and drive outcomes. In your role, you will report to the VP of Product.

As a Technical Communications Director at Fivetran, you will: 

• Enthusiastically champion great technical writing throughout Fivetran
• Advocate for great documentation practices, continually looking to improve the workflow of our Technical Communications Managers and Technical Writers, while ensuring our collaborative authoring methodology is visible across engineering, support, technical sales, and product.
• Drive a company-wide Technical Communications strategy in close collaboration with your cross-functional partners and set success measures for Technical Communications.
• Enable company-wide documentation contributions and advocate for their importance within the team.
• Represent the Technical Communications Team in company-wide meetings and presentations, and as an evangelist with leaders and executives at Fivetran.
• Manage Technical Communications Managers and matrixed individual contributors embedded in our cross-functional partner teams and assure that each member has clear and measurable goals for their areas of ownership.
• Grow and nurture our global and cross-functional Technical Communications team by hiring and retaining world-class technical writers and managers with a special emphasis on team collaboration.
• Be the owner of technical terminology across all of Fivetran.

What you bring to the table: 

• You’ve managed a team of Technical Writers who are documenting complex applications, enterprise software, or APIs.
• You’ve managed other people managers.
• You owned the strategy for a large documentation site and can clearly and measurably show the role you played in making it great.
• You are deeply motivated by mentoring, leading, and growing your team.
• You’re a great writer with deep experience in documentation processes and technologies.

Nice-to-haves (optional):

• You participate in the technical writing community and are keenly aware of trends in the industry.
• You have managed a team that uses static site generators and manages docs as code.
• You’ve given public presentations or written popular articles about technical writing.
• You’ve worked with KCS methodology to generate documentation.
