Ocado Group

Embedded Software Engineer

“We are on a mission: to transform the future of online grocery through cutting-edge technology innovation.”

Ocado Technology is changing the way the world shops using advanced Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, Big Data, Cloud and IoT. We develop the innovative software and hardware systems that power Ocado.com, as well as the unique ‘Ocado Smart Platform’ which is being implemented by ambitious retailers across the world from Europe to America, Asia and beyond.

We build everything in-house: from intelligent, frictionless e-commerce platforms to highly automated warehouses, our employees are skilled specialists with expertise across a wide range of technologies. We’re working on cutting-edge innovations that are shaping the future of our society.

We are a fast-growing, global company. Today we have colleagues in development centre across the world - London, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City (UK), Krakow, Wroclaw (Poland), Sofia (Bulgaria), Barcelona (Spain), Stockholm (Sweden), Las Vegas, San Francisco (USA) and Toronto (Canada).

In the Bot System Engineering team our mission is to promote system thinking and drive innovation in Ocado’s disruptive environment. We’re trailblazing when it comes to robotics and automated logistics solutions and with our rapid company growth, now’s the time to join us and be part of the ‘Ocado Revolution’. We’re looking for a passionate Team Leader to join us, who will be responsible for providing leadership to our Systems Engineering team, whilst continuing to improve effectiveness and quality of control systems on bot products.

What does the team do

We are building a diverse, agile and  highly-resourced team to push the boundaries of what’s possible in our highly automated warehouse systems. Our remit is to design, develop and support innovative automated charging systems which feed our fleet of autonomous bots. We’re looking for outstanding, enthusiastic engineers to join us, at the start of what promises to be an exciting, challenging push to engineer 100% automated, completely unmanned grocery fulfilment centres.

Within the division, you’ll be working closely alongside world-leading experts in automation and robotics who have already achieved results that are putting us leagues ahead of our competitors. We’re a friendly group, and any one of us will happily talk (at length) about the tech we are working on.

What would I be doing?

As it’s a growing team, you’ll be a key voice in the development of the technology. We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate an ability to take a fast, lean, and iterative approach. You’ll also be called upon to design new products from scratch, with scope to think creatively about design, component selection, and functionality - you will own product development from the drawing board all the way through to testing and productionising.

In doing so, we’ll expect you to become the expert on the products you work on, and identify opportunities for improvements and products we hadn’t yet considered. A candidate successful in the role will quickly make their mark as a key member in a rapidly growing team and product portfolio.

Who are you?

You are a skilled engineer with an unwavering attention to detail. You’re strongly aware of the tools and processes used to build your designs, and can demonstrate you’ve got hands-on engineering experience. Where necessary, you aren’t afraid of getting your hands dirty installing and trialling your new creations, then iterating on the design until it’s perfect. You’ll ideally be comfortable working with integrating Robot arms and cartesian pick and place systems within custom developed machinery,  and while we’re fairly light on processes, you respect them where it’s appropriate - design reviews, FMEAs, change management etc are all embedded within the team.

What we are looking for

  • Experienced in C/ Java programming skills
  • Experienced in embedded software development or code that controls hardware

This would make you stand out from the crowd

  • Knowledge of motor control or positioning systems
  • Experience and/or knowledge in CAN bus / CANopen and other bus protocols
  • Experience and /or knowledge in Linux applications
  • Experience and/or knowledge in Python
  • Experience and/or knowledge in AWS and containers
  • Experienced or keen to learn SQL and google big query
  • Strong knowledge in OOP architecture and cloud apps
  • A working knowledge of the full product lifecycle of embedded electronic devices (blank page design, proof of concept demonstrators, productionisation, manufacturing and maintenance)
