ESL Instructor/Coordinator

The NYC Data Science Academy is a school and boot camp looking for an experienced, organized self-starter to launch our new English as a Second Language (ESL program). The curriculum is approved by the State of New York and in the accreditation process, and we wish to begin offering the class as soon as possible. This inaugural instructor/coordinator will independently get the academic side off the ground by creating a syllabus, supplements, and lesson plans. This is an ideal opportunity for someone experienced and independently motivated.

Teaching is 18 classroom hours per week (mornings) and extra hours as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Create syllabi for three levels contained in the course outline

• Advise administrative staff as to the needs of the ESL program

• Plan and deliver ESL lessons to students

• Create engaging and interactive lesson plans that cater to the needs of diverse learners

• Use a variety of teaching methods and materials to enhance student learning

• Assess student progress and provide feedback on their language development

• Manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive learning environment

• Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate students with special needs or visual impairments

• Collaborate with other teachers and staff to support student learning and development

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree

• Credential for ESL instruction

• Experience creating lesson plans and syllabi from scratch

• Bilingual proficiency in English and another language is an asset

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to develop rapport with students from diverse cultural backgrounds

• Knowledge of literacy education principles and strategies for adult language learners

• Familiarity with classroom management techniques and behavior management strategies

• Data Science experience, exposure, or education a plus

Salary: $26.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week

Experience: Adult ESL education: 1 year (Required)

License/Certification: New York State (BPSS) Teaching Certification (Preferred)
