BermudAir is seeking an experienced Head of Safety and Emergency Response Program (ERP) to join our dynamic and rapidly growing team. Position Summary
The Head of Safety & ERP is responsible for managing the Safety Department and ensuring compliance with aviation safety regulations, policies, and best practices. This includes developing and maintaining a Safety Management System (SMS), overseeing safety audits, incident investigations, and training programs, and fostering a proactive safety culture across the airline. The Head of Safety plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the airline and serves as the primary advocate for safety at all levels.
This position reports to the Accountable Manager (AM) and Deputy AM Chief Operations Officer (COO). In the absence of the Head of Safety & ERP, responsibilities will be delegated to the COO, Head of Safety Deputy, with the Safety Compliance Manager's support.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and oversee the airline’s SMS to meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Safety Review Board (SRB) Chair and Departmental Safety Action Group (DSAG) Chair for Safety.
- Ensure compliance with all national and international aviation safety regulations, including those set by ICAO and the Civil Aviation Authority.
- Regularly review and update company safety policies, procedures, and SMS/ERP manuals to reflect regulatory changes and industry best practices.
- Liaise with external safety organizations, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to coordinate investigations and meet compliance requirements.
- Lead investigations into incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring root cause analysis and implementation of preventive measures.
- Flight Data Monitoring event reviews with the Flight Safety Officers (FSOs) and safety managers.
- Conduct risk management processes, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies.
- Documentation, tracking, and analyzing safety data and trends to identify risks and recommend improvements.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of Mandatory Occurrence Reports (MORs), safety-related incidents, thorough investigations with effective mitigation, corrective actions, and monitor effectiveness.
- Provide expert advice to senior management on safety-related issues and operational risks.
- Prepare detailed reports on safety incidents and accidents, including actionable recommendations.
- Design and implement safety training programs for all employees, including flight crew, ground staff, and cabin crew.
- Conduct regular safety briefings, workshops, and seminars to reinforce a proactive safety culture.
- Promote open communication and a no-blame safety reporting environment, fostering company-wide engagement with safety objectives.
- Monitor and manage safety risks across all areas of the airline’s operations, including flight operations, ground handling, and customer service.
- Implement and follow up on corrective and preventive measures based on safety audits, risk assessments, and hazard registry.
- Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of safety policies and programs, driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead the Safety Department team, mentoring and motivating staff to maintain high performance and professional standards.
- Represent the airline in safety committees, cross-departmental meetings, and with regulatory authorities to address safety concerns.
- Work closely with other departments (e.g., flight operations, technical, and ground handling) to ensure safety practices are integrated throughout operations.
- Maintain the Emergency Response Plan, Family Assistance Plan, ERP roles, actions, ensuring readiness and effective employee training.
- Conduct ERP tabletop exercises, yearly mandatory internal and airport drills.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in aviation, engineering, business administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Equivalent auditing experience in areas of operations, including safety, quality assurance, and regulatory.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in aviation safety, with at least 5 years in a senior safety leadership role, preferably within an airline.
- Advanced certifications in SMS, ERP, incident investigation, or aviation safety (e.g., ICAO or IATA safety courses).
- Experience in policy/procedure development, investigations, root cause analysis, and/or industrial safety.
- Proven experience demonstrating organizational and project management skills.
- In-depth knowledge of SMS, risk management, incident investigation, and aviation safety regulations to drive corrective actions, safety promotion, and effectiveness.
- Formal training and experience in auditing, risk management, and root cause analysis.
- Proven ability to lead and manage safety teams while fostering a safety-conscious culture.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess risks and implement mitigation measures effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal and social skills. Written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex safety data clearly.
- Strong relationships with regulatory authorities and safety organizations.
- Meticulous commitment to upholding the highest safety standards and improving compliance.
- A proactive approach to safety, attention to detail, timeliness, facilitation, and document change, the ability to hold employees accountable, and striving for continuous improvement.
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple safety-related projects simultaneously.
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and drive safety initiatives across all departments to achieve company and regulatory standards
