Convergent Research
Convergent Research

Head of Talent

At Convergent Research, we identify bottlenecks to scientific progress that, if overcome, could unlock major advances in human health, climate change, biosecurity, and economic growth. We are interested in supporting platform technologies that can broadly accelerate entire fields of research by removing these bottlenecks.

Why have moonshot efforts to alleviate these bottlenecks remained unattempted? We believe this is because there aren't institutions designed to attempt them. Undertaking them requires more capital than startups typically have access to, a more industrial-grade, professionalized division of labor than found in academic labs, and greater operational scale, focus, and speed than exists in most large organizations.

To solve this problem, we at Convergent Research incubate and launch Focused Research Organizations (FROs). FROs execute with the intensity of the world’s best deep-tech startups to build critical tools for science that academic labs can’t build and industry won’t.

The Role

Every FRO needs a great idea, great funders, and a great team. As Head of Talent at Convergent Research, you will own the latter across our entire portfolio of FROs.

You’ll help assemble FRO founding teams that can tackle some of the world’s hardest technical problems. You’ll teach these founders everything they need to know about designing, hiring and scaling a company from a handful to 25+. And you’ll work closely with the rest of the Convergent Research team to make sure every FRO team is happy, high performing, and able to hit their goals.

You are:

  • A builder of world-class teams. Designing or sourcing for great teams is one thing. Building them is another. You do the latter.
  • Technical/scientific. You’re excited to learn the difference between someone who is an expert at expansion microscopy vs. electron microscopy, or you already know the difference.
  • An excellent judge of talent. You know who the A-players are and have a large network of them.
  • Biased toward action. Instead of waiting for detailed instructions to come to you, you seek out information and ask for advice from stakeholders. After that, you’re off to making stuff happen.
  • A coach as well as an executor. You know when to step in to ensure crucial activities get done and when to step back to and support leaders operating autonomously.
  • Empathetic, but not to a fault. We’re all human, and you’re aware of that. You’ll work with people as individuals to try to understand their needs and find the best possible solutions for everyone.
  • A juggler. Convergent Research is a startup. We move quickly. You can change priorities and handle multiple simultaneous projects with aplomb. (If you can actually juggle, like, tennis balls or something, that’s cool too.)
  • A process designer. You can develop systems on a company-wide level that mitigate bias in hiring, cultivate relationships to build our pipeline, and keep track of short and long term staffing needs.
  • A great communicator. You’re equally comfortable talking CR’s long term impact vision as you are about what to look out for in a first hire. You can distill thought leadership into repeatable, practical tools for all our FROs.

You will:

  • Assemble FRO founding teams. Most potential FROs start with one or a few founders getting in touch with Convergent Research. By the time they launch, you’ll have ensured each FRO has a founding team as capable as the world’s top deep-tech startups. You’ll also work with Convergent Research leadership and our event staff to build a network of talented entrepreneurs that we can tap for FRO leadership roles.
  • Recruit scientists, engineers, and nontechnical talent who will change the world. You’ll work with FRO leadership to write job descriptions, post on job boards, do outbound recruiting, review resumes, and conduct interviews.
  • Be a coach. In addition to getting your hands dirty with recruiting, you’ll help FRO leadership teams learn to do it themselves. You’ll help teach them make hiring plans, coach interviewing skills, and provide guidance on compensation.
  • Build support collateral. With more FROs coming we need a laser focus on scalability. You’ll help transform insights and 1:1 coaching into repeatable, sharable tools and templates.
  • Build Convergent Research’s talent function. Hire sourcing firms. Manage external recruiters. Design collateral and instruction sections.
  • Create an intentionally inclusive team. We seek to be guided by a diverse set of voices, which we believe are instrumental to the success of the organization and the individuals who compose it.
  • Attend Quarterly Team Meetings. Our team meets on-site for a week once every 3 months to set goals, collaborate, and participate in fun team building activities!

In six months, you will have:

  • Recruited 6-10 FRO founders or employees. That means from beginning to end: from job descriptions, sourcing, and interviewing to offer letters and onboarding.
  • Designed a skills-based recruiting process. Every job should have a scorecard, a job description, and interview templates in Lever. You’ll teach people how to use each of these tools.
  • Developed onboarding and training to teach FRO founders to hire. Every FRO founding team starts from a different place. You’ll figure out how to keep them all up-to-speed on team building over their first few months with CR.

We offer:

  • An opportunity to change the world and work with some of the smartest and the most talented experts from different fields.
  • Competitive salary: $180,000 - $250,000.
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance through a PPO plan; parental leave.
  • Generous time off + paid holidays.
  • Wellness allowance for fitness and wellness activities.
  • Support for fully remote work.
  • Frequent opportunities to spend time with colleagues in-person.

Convergent Research aims to help fill a structural gap in today's R&D system. We enable fundamental research that requires unusual levels of scale and coordination yet is not rapidly monetizable by industry. We’re bringing together top talent from academia, industry, and startups to build a new model for innovative R&D. As an incubator within the Schmidt Futures Network, we identify high-impact scientific or technical research and development opportunities, ultimately defining and launching these projects as Focused Research Organizations.
