Within Ocado Group sits Platform Implementation, whose mission is ‘to orchestrate the implementation of Ocado’s platforms globally’. This department focuses on the full programme management life cycle of the implementation of our highly automated, multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) - from pre-deal, through to the design, construction, installation, testing and ‘go-live’ phases (with all the process and portfolio management in between). This department is instrumental in ensuring we deliver these CFCs on time, to budget, and to the specific requirements of each client.
The Construction and Installation (C&I) department is responsible for delivering the physical elements of all Ocado Group projects globally. The Health & Safety Manager sits within the Install Excellence team, and takes accountability for:
- Providing strategic advice and guidance on C&I H&S policies and risks
- Providing leadership to local H&S specialists and establishing a proactive central H&S support service with a commercially-focused influence
- Developing and maintaining H&S policies and procedures for C&I to ensure that all managers, supervisors and staff are trained and comply with requirements of territory and role
- Representing central C&I H&S in reports on H&S program and performance
This role is remote and travel-based, but ideally candidates will have immediate access to one of our local Fulfillment Centers - Cincinnati, OH; Orlando, FL; Dallas, TX; Pleasant Prairie, WI; Atlanta, GA; Frederick, MD; Aurora, CO; or Romulus, MI.
What will you be doing?

- Be the subject matter expert for Ocado on HSE matters for the FC Sites
- Responsible for ensuring suitable arrangements are in place at each FC to protect all Ocado personnel and 3rd parties
- Responsible for coordinating and communicating with Ocado’s Engineering Operations Team and the wider HSE team in all aspects of HSE management and control of hazards.
- Ensure that all of the operational site activities assigned to your responsibility comply with the most stringent HSE legislation and codes of practice, and adhere to local regulations.
- Review the core HSE documents on a regular basis (Risk Assessments, Orientation Plan, Fire Plan) . Updating the documentation as required and communicate the changes to all associated stakeholders.
- Ensure HSE related material is available for the delivery of Ocado-specific inductions to all Ocado personnel. Be the responsible person for the database of induction attendance and associated sign-off forms.
- Ensure that an up to date record-keeping matrix is in place documenting relevant HSE training received for all Ocado personnel. This matrix also needs to be reviewed on a regular basis, identifying any training that is about to expire.
- Coach and support the Ocado site management team with their duties and responsibilities regarding HSE management.
- Liaise with the Client’s team and any 3rd parties to proactively support a strong bond and culture around HSE issues, ensuring any concerns or shortcomings are being addressed and that the facility is maintained by the Client to the agreed SLA and regulatory standards.
- Support toolbox talks, ensure they are relevant to the status of the project, as well as delivering these talks when on site.
- Undertake regular and frequent site walks to identify and inform management of compliance issues, risks, and improvement opportunities. Address any non-compliance/ communicate to the Engineering Operational management team as required.
- Own the review and approval process for Risk Assessments and SSoW for all of Ocado’s commissioning and operations associated activities and ensure that sufficient risk mitigation is in place.
- Responsible for EngOp’s risk identification, mitigation and documentation.
- Ensure all SSOW are defined and understood across Ocado’s work on site, adopting the best of Ocado Engineering’s standards and policies, the needs of Ocado’s Client and Ocado’s operations, as well as OSHA regulations e.g. working at height, isolation, lock-out-tag-out etc.
- Formally undertake audits and inspections for all types of Ocado’s work to ensure the highest standards are being met and maintained ( e.g.lifting, working at height,, lock-out-tag-out, plant/people/tasks).
- Be the responsible person and point of contact for Ocado HQ in relation to HSE standards and for any third-party audits.
- Be the responsible person and main point of contact for Ocado in relation to all emergency protocols (e.g. first aid, fire, evacuation etc.)
- Take a key role in or Chair regular Ocado HSE meetings in line with agreed schedules for all operational activities, manage actions and share minutes with Ocado Regional HSE Manager (including all H&S statistics) and Client as required
- Record all accidents and incidents in AssessNET. Reviewing trends and data capture to reduce risk and ensure close out in a timely manner.
- Responsible for supporting the investigating of all incidents, near-misses and accidents and implementing mitigations, corrective actions and learnings, and logging this on AssessNET within the required timeframes.
- Keep the AssessNET database up-to-date and ensure that all required stakeholders have access to the platform. Monitor information on AssessNET and share learnings from other sites to raise awareness.
- Conduct inventory of safety supplies on site, in particular PPE and first aid supplies. Liaise with the Ocado site team to ensure that orders are placed for any necessary equipment.
- Review both Ocado and US Government communications in relation to any changes in guidance eg. Covid-19 and ensure that we administer and adhere to the most recent and up to date requirements regarding Covid-19. Escalate any non-compliance to the EngOp’s lead.
- Where observing imminent dangerous conditions, immediately stop work and promptly notify the appropriate manager. Work shall remain stopped until the condition is rectified and made safe by the responsible manager. Support Ocado in reporting the matter to the appropriate stakeholders and assist in developing a solution to address the condition and avoid such conditions in the future.
- Contribute to updating contents on the site Health and Safety boards.
- Contribute to continuous improvement activity especially with regard to the relationship with the Ocado site management team and Client representatives.
About you...
Minimum:
- Proven track record and experience of managing OHS operations for Engineering Operations
- Understanding of KPIs and performance management.
- An effective communicator with the ability to negotiate, influence and use diplomacy with clients, colleagues and contractors at all levels.
- Be a team player who is willing to cover absences of others outside of H&S responsibilities
- Knowledge of appropriate permitting and licensing in location
- Excellent OSHA standards knowledge, Certified Safety Practitioner
Preferred (in addition to minimum)
- Good knowledge of Fire risk management
- Training qualification to deliver the required level of training to the Teams
- Relevant training for emergency protocols e.g. first aid, fire warden etc.
