International Head of Indirect Tax

Stripe provides tools that make it easier for businesses and entrepreneurs all over the world to grow their businesses.  We work on some of the hardest technical, business, and regulatory problems around.  Our tax team works with Stripes across the company to develop an efficient tax structure, as our business scales and expands into new markets. We are looking for a well-rounded and seasoned tax professional to help us lead this effort globally.

You will lead management of the indirect taxation function at Stripe, engaging in indirect tax policy matters that may be impactful to Stripe, assisting with the process of indirect tax classification of our product expansion, supporting tax controversy matters, and any planning efforts impacting our operations.  You and your team will work with the regional leads around the world. You will work for a rapidly growing company in a fast paced environment, while collaborating with numerous functional teams across our organization. The position will be based in San Francisco or Seattle, although other locations can be supported.

You will:

  • Lead and hands-on management of the global indirect tax function, to include mentoring a growing team of indirect tax professionals, all with a strong moral compass and integrity.
  • Work with the product teams in assessing, designing and implementing correct taxability of Stripe products globally  as well as guide us in developing world-class invoicing and billing solutions from a tax perspective
  • Evaluate the current indirect tax structure and recommend any changes or planning ideas that will optimize the structure, as well as work with the tax planning and M&A tax team members on organic and inorganic growth and expansion.
  • Communicate our indirect tax planning, goals, risks, and priorities to senior management.
  • Manage the indirect tax compliance process, globally.
  • Participate in policy matters affecting indirect taxes globally, including advising us on where we should invest more time in educating policy makers.
  • Participate in  indirect tax audit matters, as well as establish and defend  extraterritorial VAT positions.

You should have:

  • 15+ years of relevant indirect tax experience with strong knowledge of indirect tax laws and broad experience with indirect tax regulations.
  • A strong technical tax background that enables you to develop and implement tax strategies.
  • An advanced degree or professional qualification in tax or law.
  • Both public accounting / legal firm and industry experience.
  • Experience with indirect taxes as it relates to the distribution of digital services and physical products.
  • A proven ability to research and communicate technical tax issues clearly to non-tax team members and work effectively across all functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to develop and mentor other members of the organization.
  • Flexibility to adapt quickly to changes in tax laws, as well as changes in our products and services.
  • Humility, empathy, and some comedy.

  • Experience working in technology, payments, or financial services.
