Internship: Street Medicine (Spring 2026)

TLDR

Engage with housing-insecure individuals to assess medical needs and coordinate care as part of a diverse integrated health team.

Access Services is seeking a motivated and empathetic Intern to join our Homeless and Housing Services Street Medicine program, with locations in Plymouth Meeting or Pottstown, PA. This role offers direct experience working with housing-insecure individuals and participation in a multispecialty integrated care team.  As a Street Medicine Intern, you will engage with individuals experiencing homelessness, assess medical care needs, and help coordinate resources to address social determinants of health.  

Internship Details: 

  • Hours: 8–16 hours per week, Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, 8am–4pm. 
  • Duration: Entire semester; targeted start date January 19th, 2026. 
  • Location: Plymouth Meeting or Pottstown, PA (Montgomery County) 
  • Supervision: Direct support from a Street Medicine Navigator during internship hours; weekly check-ins and supervision from the Director for Integrated Health. 

Requirements

Key Responsibilities of a Street Medicine Intern: 

  • Engage with housing-insecure individuals to assess the level of medical care needed. 
  • Document and communicate the support needed to the appropriate Street Medicine team partners. 
  • Manage patient flow and triage using a waitlist. 
  • Participate in pre- and post-round care coordination conversations with the Street Medicine Team.  
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance. 
  • Complete documentation as required for care coordination and service delivery. 

Qualifications of a Street Medicine Intern: 

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master's degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related field (required). 
  • Excellent organizational skills and basic awareness of common chronic health conditions and social determinants of health. 
  • Strong engagement skills, ability to remain empathetic, and offer emotional support. 
  • Proficiency in, or ability to learn and use Microsoft Office Suite, and an electronic health record.  
  • Reliable method of transportation for community-based work (required). 
  • CPR and First Aid certification is a plus. 
  • Willingness to travel; willingness to meet individuals in various environments, including wooded encampments and street locations. 

 Learning Opportunities: 

  • Direct experience with housing-insecure individuals and care coordination. 
  • Education on engaging with individuals using Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, advocacy, and person-centered support. 
  • Participation in a multispecialty integrated care team. This team includes: Primary Care, Emergency Department Physicians, Psychiatry, Community Health Workers, Street Outreach, and Case Management.    
  • Understanding of triage, care coordination, and utilization of resources. 
  • Exposure to common county resources and eligibility requirements. 
  • Insight into how public health issues are addressed and impact the general population. 

Required Transportation:  

  • Name of intern must be listed on auto insurance policy for vehicle used  
  • Intern must be over 18, with two years of prior driving experience 
  • Intern must pass background check related to Driving Motor Vehicle history 

Required Clearances, to be completed before first day of internship, including:  

  • FBI Clearance 
  • DMV Driving History Report 
  • PA Criminal Clearance 
  • Child Abuse Clearance 
  • Physical 

Essential Working Conditions/Physical Demands:   

  • Walk, climb stairs by self   
  • Work in a standard office environment; Utilize desktop computer equipment daily.   
  • Able to lift or move items associated with sedentary work and light work (exert up to 20 lbs.)
