Junior Game Designer

Black Shamrock is seeking a Junior Game Designer to join our Dublin team and work on a variety of exciting projects, collaborating with teams across the globe. Candidates will need to demonstrate a strong aptitude for critical thinking and analysis and experience in the field of game design. They will be expected to contribute across the game design process while improving their own skill set under the mentorship of senior staff.

Our ideal candidate would have a high level of enthusiasm for creating games content and systems and the ability to share this enthusiasm and contribute as part of a team. Finally, candidates will need to prove their strong passion for games across many genres.

What you will do

  • Support the game vision, as set by the Creative Director(s) and stakeholders.
  • Work with senior and lead designers, as part of the design team, to implement gameplay features from paper design to final implementation.
  • Work with the design team to create design-related documents that provide clear and detailed breakdowns of features and product status to other teams.
  • Collaborate as a member of the design team across all areas of games design production. These include, but are not limited to: documentation, game system design, level design, and narrative design.
  • Follow studio best practice in all aspects of work, accept and act on feedback.

Must have

  • 3rd-level qualification in game design or similar field.
  • Strong game design portfolio demonstrating competency in level and/or game design.
  • Long-standing passion for playing games of multiple genres.
  • Good understanding of game design principles, with an ability to analyze and dissect competitor games and their mechanics.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English, while also being comfortable on video calls.
  • Proven ability to learn and work as part of a team.

Good to have

  • Experience using game engines, tools, and pipelines, as well as the scripting layer associated with them (i.e. Blueprints). Preferably Unreal, others considered.
  • Experience working in a design capacity on any video game.
  • Completion of any official Unreal training programs.
