(Junior/Mid-Level) Embedded Software Engineer

TLDR

Develop safety-critical embedded software that directly controls vehicle functions in real time, with rapid production ownership and hands-on hardware collaboration.

Ever imagined saying, “I helped launch the future of transportation”?

We’re rewriting the rules of urban mobility. At Vay, customers tap a button and a car arrives - with no one inside - powered by our world-first Remote Driving technology on real public streets.

We’re live in Las Vegas and scaling fast, powered by a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Our mission is simple: replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, door-to-door mobility model. If you want to build something real, visible, and genuinely transformative, you’ll feel right at home here.

What’s happening at Vay

  • First to roll out vehicles in both Europe and the USA on public roads without a human being inside & currently the 2nd largest commercial, driverless car fleet in the Western World.
  • We've partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks in the US, showcasing our ability to integrate our system into heavy-duty commercial vehicles and expand the applications of our tech across the US.
  • We’ve completed 10’s of thousands of trips so far and are busy multiplying our Las Vegas fleet just to meet demand!
  • ...And soon we’ll be expanding across the US & Europe 🚀

Why this role is exciting

At Vay, cars are remotely operated in real time from our Driving Centers in Berlin and Las Vegas, something few companies worldwide have done on public roads. As an Embedded Software Engineer here at Vay, you’ll work on the safety-critical software that directly controls vehicle functions: how a car accelerates, steers, brakes, monitors itself for faults, and reacts in emergencies in real time. Your code moves real physical systems on real roads.

This is safety-critical embedded development with genuine ownership for engineers early in their career, to learn fast, and have a real opportunity to see your work in production within weeks and months, not years.

What you’ll be driving

  • Designing, implementing, and verifying embedded software for the safe remote operation of vehicles on public roads
  • Analysing and validating system behaviour across software and hardware boundaries, and designing robust solutions
  • Analysing fleet data and logs to validate behaviour and guide improvements
  • Working hands-on with the hardware, including measurement equipment, schematics, and data sheets
  • Driving improvements in our tools, automation, and workflows
  • Working closely with hardware, motion-control, systems, testing operations, and other teams across the company to solve problems unique to remote driving

What are we looking for

We welcome applications from early-career engineers, including recent graduates and those transitioning from adjacent fields such as, robotics, IoT, mechatronics, or other complex embedded systems. We’re more interested in how you approach problems and learn than in experience with a specific toolchain.

  • Solid programming skills in Embedded C, and motivation to work on safety-critical systems
  • A hands-on, analytical mindset: you use measurement tools and data to understand how a system truly behaves and to validate it with rigour
  • Comfort with ambiguity: you stay persistent and methodical when problems are hard
  • Drive and curiosity: you proactively seek out improvements and get involved beyond your immediate task
  • A collaborative, cross-team way of working and clear communication across engineering disciplines
  • Eagerness to learn fast and grow. We’ll support you in growing into broader system ownership over time
Nice to have (genuinely optional, you can pick these up here)
  • Experience with real-time or RTOS-based systems
  • Exposure to testing/validation environments: simulation, HIL, or in-vehicle
  • Familiarity with automotive interfaces and standards: CAN / CAN FD, AUTOSAR, ISO 26262, MISRA-C
  • Experience with automotive tooling such as Vector (CANoe/CANalyzer) and Lauterbach (TRACE32)
  • Custom digital logic / FPGA / VHDL, or other low-level hardware interaction

None of these are entry requirements. If you have the fundamentals and the mindset, you’ll learn the automotive specifics on the job.

How we work

We move fast and use AI as a genuine part of how we build day to day, not as a novelty, but as a way to raise the quality of our thinking, close gaps faster, and spend more time on the problems that actually matter. We value engineers who can direct these tools well and put the time they save into systems thinking, collaboration, and getting things right.

On the technical side: Embedded C on microcontrollers, RTOS-based real-time systems, CAN/CAN FD, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and real-vehicle validation. Safety-oriented coding standards (ISO 26262, MISRA-C), Git, and Linux-based CI/CD.

This role will be based in our Berlin HQ. We welcome applications from candidates already in Berlin or looking to relocate. Please submit your CV in English.
