Lead, Data Engineer

A cross-functional, enterprise-wide Innovation team is looking for a Lead Data Engineer to enable research, design, and implementation of innovative investment capabilities. The position involves working with both company specific data, as well as, macro and economic data and indicators. Through involvement in a cross-functional Innovation team, you will see firsthand how your contribution is delivering long-term value to the CPP Fund for the benefit of 20 million CPP contributors and beneficiaries.

The opportunity:

• Work in a fast-paced environment, collocated with developers, data engineers, data scientists, and investment professionals
• Lead all aspects of data engineering for the team and be the go to subject-matter expert for the team as well as the broader organization.
• Perform complex analyses of both structured and unstructured datasets using latest technology and techniques
• Prepare, transform, combine and manage structured and unstructured data for use by data scientists and investment professionals
• Participate in the project life cycle from analysis, to development and testing, and applies best practices and hands-on expertise as required
• Foster a positive environment in innovation team and maintain strong relationships with business and external cloud partners
• Discover and understand the platform and tooling requirements of our business partners and provide solutions
• Define and shape CPP Investments' future technology and investment capabilities and processes

• 7+ years of minimum, progressive technical experience with proven business impact. A diverse set of technical experiences are a nice-to-have
• Experience as a data engineering leader; organizing and motivating teams while directing multiple projects simultaneously serving multiple stakeholders
• Professional experience working with Big Data including cleaning, transforming, cataloging, mapping etc.
• Solid programming skills with professional programming experience in a data context (e.g. data extraction, data manipulation, data analysis, etc.)
• Familiarity leveraging cloud technology best practices to enable the distribution and analysis of big data on the cloud (formatting/partitioning/etc.) would be considered an asset
• Exposure to big data workflows and analytics tools (Spark/EMR/Databricks/Cassandra) would be considered an asset
• University degree in Engineering or Computer Science preferred
• A passion around learning new technologies with a demonstrated track record of acting on this in prior roles
• Polished communication and presentation skills. Experience in presenting to and communicating with senior executives and stakeholders
• Experience building flexible solutions that can adapt quickly to changing requirements
• Ability to work in an entrepreneurial environment and be a self-starter
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
