Atlas AI
Machine Learning Engineer
Atlas AI monitors the drivers of economic development across the emerging markets so that financial capital can advance societal well-being. Spun out of Stanford and founded in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, we are a well-funded AI start-up focused on transforming the quality of information that corporate, social sector and government decision-makers have access to in-service of allocating scarce resources where they can have the greatest impact on development. This is a rare opportunity to have a significant impact on the evolution of the company. You will be part of a big mission and a small team making significant advances at the intersection of AI, earth science, and economic development. Read more about what we’re building in this blog post by our CEO.
As our Machine Learning Engineer, you will design and implement innovative ML solutions to real-world problems in challenging data environments. You will push the envelope of large-scale, AI-based geospatial applications. Your work will directly impact decisions from key stakeholders in emerging markets.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement ML pipelines, with a focus on deep learning models for the segmentation of geospatial objects.
- Evaluate data needs, identify sources of training data, optimize solutions for different data-scarcity scenarios.
- Fine-tune and validate model predictions for optimal product outputs.
- Provide feedback on the team’s work, support others.
- Be proactively up to date with relevant literature on applied ML.
- Assist the engineering team in scaling up research prototypes.
Key Qualifications
- M.S. in Computer Science/Statistics/related field, or equivalent work experience.
- In-depth understanding of data structures, algorithms, and the fundamentals of statistics and mathematics underlying modern machine learning.
- Familiarity with the theory and applications of modern computer vision methods, particularly for object detection and image segmentation.
- Experience training neural networks. Experience with satellite images and geospatial data is a plus.
- Familiarity with databases and other warehousing/management tools (including SQL).
- Excellent Python coding and strong engineering practices, including:
- Familiarity with deep learning toolkits such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Experience with data science Python tools, particularly those dedicated to geospatial data (e.g. gdal, shapely, rasterio, geopandas).
- Familiarity with multi-threaded programming is a plus.
- Publications at top artificial intelligence and machine learning conferences such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, AISTATS, UAI are desirable but not necessary.
Personal Qualities
- Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
- Innovative, forward-thinking, and highly motivated
- Passionate about making a difference in developing nations and helping the under-served
