Open Source Lead
Today, from the moment you connect to the internet, most websites focus on learning everything they can about you. In Web 3, the moment you share an Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, or Tezos wallet address with anyone, you expose your entire on-chain transaction history to the world.
To us, this is crazy. We should have complete agency and control over what stories we share and how we share them. We believe the same should be true on the internet. This is why we are stewarding the development of Tari, a default-private digital asset protocol.
Tari is unique with a highly intentional design. Our mission is to make it easy for developers to create and deploy Web 3 interoperable applications that are highly scalable and secure without spending months on audits.
In addition to stewarding the development of this new protocol, we are building the first application that will use it. This app is Yat, a new censorship-resistant internet identity system that enables everyone to use a personalized string of emojis as their universal username.
Why emojis? Over 90% of online users on Earth use emojis every single day. They are genuinely our global language. We use them to tell stories and connect with others in a beautifully simple way. Yats create a system that allows people to own a single emoji or string of emojis that best represents them. Yats are owned by whoever creates them and are an internet freedom product. Imagine a world where we all own self-sovereign emoji identities that are self-directed, deeply censorship-resistant, and cannot be canceled.
What if instead of johnsmith535, someone could be 🔥🐉 or 👑 🎳(kingpin) or 🦄🤖💃? They could use this unique emoji username to do the same things they could do with a standard username, like sending or receiving money, chatting with friends, or creating a website. This would change how we connect. Instead of one-dimensional email addresses, usernames, or phone numbers that say nothing about us, we could express ourselves in truly remarkable ways. The possibilities are endless.

About You:
- You have the passion for open source, you have contributed to multiple open-source projects, get why it exists, why it works, and where it makes the most sense.
- You dig into creating sustainable systems and communities that exist long after you are gone.
- You are no stranger to the infrastructure around open source projects - technical aspects like repository/project management and the human elements like community relations and governance.
- You are a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
- You are great at juggling competing priorities and figuring out the best way to stack rank to achieve our ultimate objectives near-term, mid-term, and long-term.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- You are comfortable within distributed work environments, collaborating across time zones and cultures.
- You want to make the world a better place in the specific areas Tari Labs is determined to make an enormous impact: internet freedom and privacy for all.
- You are intrigued by our unique mix of building an iconic company by creating a profoundly passionate community filled with love. This highly useful product allows people to express themselves in entirely new ways by leveraging the Tari blockchain as our ultimate source of truth.
What You’ll Do:
- Keep doing what you're already doing: contribute to open-source projects
- Interact with existing contributors, maintainers, and community members, to ensure we are deeply ingrained in that project's ecosystem
- Work with engineering teams to write specific code, where necessary, and submit/pull requests.
- Champion those pull requests to open-source contributors and maintainers to try to get them merged!
- Help and advice on open-source governance practices, broad consensus, and other mechanisms
- Contribute to our desire to use sound, easy to understand, open-source compatible licenses wherever possible
- You'll directly impact the culture of open source at Tari.
Requirements:
- 7+ years of software development experience or 5+ years with an advanced degree.
- Experience contributing to recent and multiple active open source projects.
- Experience growing and building open-source communities.
- Knowledge of open-source licenses and general open-source governance models.
- Open source dependency management tools.
- GitHub and open-source CI tooling (e.g., Travis CI, Coveralls, CircleCI).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to map innovative and clear solutions to complex problems while managing multiple projects
- You thrive in challenging environments where priorities shift frequently. Ability to operate effectively in tactical and strategic capacities -- you can comfortably adjust your altitude and roll up your sleeves as needed.
Bonus Points:
- BA/BS in Computer Science or a related technical field (MS is a plus) or equivalent work experience
- Experience as a maintainer, or lead maintainer, on an open-source project
- Comfortable speaking and presenting at Development conferences
