Senior Data Engineer

About the role
The Senior Data Engineer is a senior technical contributor within our Data Services teams, responsible for designing, implementing, operating, and supporting robust, secure, and scalable data solutions for business stakeholders across the APAC region. You will lead by example in engineering quality, drive continuous improvement in system health, and solve complex technical challenges with a passion for your craft. You will apply advanced data and software engineering best practices, mentor team members, and play a key role in shaping the technical direction of our data platform.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver complex data products, pipelines, and SQL queries with a strong focus on quality, scalability, and alignment to SEEK's architecture and data governance practices.
- Deploy and operate data tools, infrastructure, and cloud services on platforms like AWS and Databricks with a high degree of independence and ownership.
- Lead and contribute to project delivery using agile processes, the Software Development Lifecycle, and cross-functional collaboration across technical and business teams.
- Drive operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, incident response, post-incident reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Champion best practices in data, software engineering, and DevOps including code review, testing, CI/CD workflows, and data governance.
- Engage with stakeholders to translate complex data requirements into technical specifications, facilitate design workshops and playbacks, and recommend fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Proactively identify and recommend technologies and practices that maintain SEEK's state-of-the-art platform while optimising cost and performance.
- Provide advanced support to end users by troubleshooting and resolving complex issues, optimising existing solutions, and sharing knowledge across the team.
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, contributing to a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
Essential skills and experience
- Extensive experience in data and software engineering, and DevOps practices, with a proven track record of delivering at scale.
- Demonstrated expertise in designing, developing, and optimising data products and pipelines, with deep understanding of data warehousing, data lake, and delta lake methodologies.
- Strong architectural capabilities in designing and implementing end-to-end data solutions that align to enterprise design patterns and governance standards.
- Extensive experience deploying and operating data infrastructure on cloud platforms.
- Exceptional programming skills in Python, PySpark, SQL, and shell scripting.
- Deep understanding of best practices including code review, testing, version control, CI/CD workflows, infrastructure as code, and data quality management.
- Proven ability to engage with business stakeholders, lead technical discussions, and independently translate requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and perform under pressure.
Desirable skills and experience
- Experience with SEEK’s data engineering toolset (e.g. Databricks, Spark, DBT, Airflow, AWS).
- Experience with Terraform.
- Recent experience implementing AI BI solutions such as Databricks Genie or Tableau Pulse.
