Simulation Engineer - Modelica
TLDR
Develop and maintain Modelica-based thermo-fluid models for data centres, validated against telemetry, and build tooling to run them at scale.
Simulation Engineer - Modelica
The Company
OctaiPipe is a young, ambitious company with the vision to be the global driving force for the next paradigm of foundational, physical AI that ensures our connected world, and its critical infrastructure, is safe, secure and sustainable. We are growing fast, having closed a recent funding round and looking to accelerate rapidly. OctaiPipe is offering the right candidate an exciting role on this adventure!
OctaiPipe is on a mission to revolutionise the optimisation of energy in data centres through decentralised artificial intelligence (AI). To do this, OctaiPipe is harnessing an elegant but revolutionary idea. Rather than move the data from the source, move the algorithms to the data to learn at the data source. This learning can be achieved with the intelligence of many devices through novel federated AI technology. OctaiPipe is developing the AI for Cooling Efficiency (ACE) application to be deployed using its own in-house distributed AI platform.
The Role
We are looking for a Simulation Engineer to help develop and maintain Modelica-based thermo-fluid system models for Data Centres, ensure they are validated against real-world telemetry data, and build the tooling needed to run them programmatically at scale.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Build, extend, and validate Modelica thermo-fluid system models (component-level and system-level).
- Diagnose and resolve model convergence, initialisation, and numerical issues.
- Calibrate and validate models against real-world telemetry data.
- Develop parameterisable model architectures that can be configured and executed programmatically without manual IDE interaction.
- Export and maintain FMU co-simulation interfaces for integration with external control systems.
- Write scripting and automation tooling (Python) to support batch simulation, parameter sweeps, and validation workflows.
- Review and assess third-party simulation deliverables for physical correctness and completeness.
- Translate simulation results and model limitations into plain language for non-specialist stakeholders (product, engineering, commercial teams).
- Contribute to technical proposals and partner discussions where simulation capability needs to be explained or scoped.
Your profile
- Strong working knowledge of Modelica — you've built, debugged, and run models in either one of OpenModelica, Dymola, Modelon Impact. You understand acausal modelling, DAE solvers, initialisation, and what makes a model converge or fail.
- Experience with thermo-fluid system simulation — heat exchangers, pumps, fluid networks, thermal zones, or similar. The specific application domain (buildings, power, process, automotive) matters less than depth of modelling experience.
- Solid Python skills. Comfortable with data manipulation (pandas, numpy), schema validation, process orchestration, CLI tools.
- Experience driving Modelica simulations programmatically — parameter sweeps, batch runs, result extraction via OMPython or scripting, not exclusively through a GUI.
- Understanding of the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standard — you've exported or consumed FMUs for co-simulation.
- Comfort working with real-world data — comparing simulation against measurements, computing error metrics, and making judgement calls about model fidelity vs data quality.
You also might have
- Familiarity with the LBNL Modelica Buildings Library, or other domain-specific Modelica libraries.
- Experience with HVAC, cooling systems, or building energy simulation.
- Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or lightweight approaches (FFD) and their coupling with system-level models.
- Familiarity with version control (git) and collaborative software development practices.

The above statements are not intended to encompass all functions and qualifications of the position; rather, they are intended to provide a general framework of the requirements of the position. Job incumbents may be required to perform other functions not specifically addressed in this description.
OctaiPipe is transforming energy optimisation in data centres through decentralised artificial intelligence. By moving algorithms to the data source instead of transferring data, OctaiPipe enables efficient learning at the edge, leveraging its proprietary distributed AI platform and its flagship AI for Cooling Efficiency (ACE) application.
